The Crookston Eagles will be closed today through Monday, May 31 in observance of Memorial Day. Please take this time to honor and give gratitude to the brave men and women who died while in the service of the U. S. military. 

The Stephen-Argyle Central Graduation will be this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Kimball Auditorium in Stephen.

The Fertile Beltrami Graduation will be this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Fertile-Beltrami new Gym.

The Kittson Central Graduation will be this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

Garbage collection in Crookston for Monday, May 31,  (Memorial Day Holiday) will be collected on Tuesday, June 1. Tuesday’s garbage and recycling collection will remain the same.

The Polk County Transfer Station will be closed on Monday, May 31 (Memorial Day). They will resume normal hours on Tuesday, June 1. 

Crookston City Hall and the Crookston Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 31 in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday.

The Crookston Veteran’s Council will have only one shortened Memorial Day Ceremony this year. It will be held on Monday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m. in the Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston.

Crookston Public Schools invite the community to a Retirement Reception on Tuesday, June 1 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Crookston High School Commons for the 2021 ISD 593 Retirees, Janise Dorman, Randy Hviding, Carol Picard and Gary Stegman. 

Explore Tales and Trails summer Library Experience will begin at the Crookston Library on June 1 and run through July 31. Read to win great prizes and attend outdoor events. This program is for everyone ages 0-18. The Polk County Commissioners will meet Tuesday, June 1 at 8 a.m. at the Polk County Transfer Station. 

The Benedictine Villa Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m. at the Golden Link. New members are always welcome.

Tuesday June, 1st there will be a Summer JO Volleyball meeting at 5:30 at Crookston High School for girls entering in the fall of 2021 7th-12th grade.

Hospice of the Red River Valley is offering a class titled Celebrating Memories for Kids on Thursday, June 3, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.  . In this class, kids ages 8-16 will have an opportunity to learn about what grief is and how honoring our memories of someone who has died can help them to live on in our hearts. Kids will learn to celebrate memories while creating their very own memory box. This virtual class is free and open to the public. Registration is required by May 24, so arrangements for class supply pick-up can be made. In some cases, the packets/lists may be mailed. Click here to register.

Erskine’s 65 Annual Water Carnival will be June 3, 4, 5, and 6 with many activities for the family, street dance,  parades, bingo, bicycle giveaways,  Midwest Rides and Amusements, Wojo’s Rodeo,  food stands, fireworks, classic car, tractor and bike show, kids turtle races, airboat rides, flea market and craft show, scramble golf tournament and much more.

The survey for the Crookston School Districts Pre-K School Readiness program is due Friday, June 4 at Washington School. The survey reserves a spot for your child in a School Readiness Classroom for Fall 2021. The survey is available here

The 11th Annual Pirate/Blue Wave Hockey Alumni Golf Outing will be Saturday, June 5 at Minakwa Golf Course.  It’s an 18 hole golf scramble starting at 10:00 a.m. with lunch provided by Minakwa. Registration is limited to the first 20-five person teams. Cost is $75 per person, click here to register and pay by PayPal. Polk County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection events will be held at the Fertile Fairgrounds on Friday, June 4 from 3:00 to 6:00pm. and at the East Shore Beach Area of Maple Lake off County Highway 10 on Saturday, June 5 from 9:00am to 12noon.  Due to COVID-19 please stay in your vehicle and pop your trunk or liftgate and let staff remove the HHW items.  Bring  paints, cleaners and automotive supplies and Polk County will dispose of them properly.  The Polk County Transfer Station and Fosston Incinerator accepts household hazardous waste Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. year-round.  For more information call Polk County Environmental Services at 1-800-482-6804 or the Northwest MN Household Hazardous Waste facility at 1-800-637-2090.

Crookston Public Schools, in partnership with the United Way of Crookston, will be offering free grab and go summer meals for all children from Highland Elementary School this summer. The program will run every Monday-Thursday from June 7 – July 29. Meals will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis from 11:00am – 12:30pm.

A reminder to people who signed up for Safety Town that it runs from June 7 through June 10.  

Garden Valley Technologies will hold their 116 Annual Meeting on Tuesday, June 8 in the Win-E-Mac School Auditorium in Erskine. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and meeting at 10:30 a.m.  Directors for District 3, 6 and 9 will be elected. Attendance gift and prize drawing will take place during the meeting.  Due to Covid restrictions, there will be not entertainment, food or beverages and products and services will not be displayed.

There will be a Spaghetti Feed and Silent Auction Fundraiser for the Bengston Family on Tuesday, June 8 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Crookston Inn. The fundraiser is for Jackson Siebel, son of Garet and Jess Bengston, who is being treated for a relapse of Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. Proceeds will go toward medical and travel related expenses. Trinity’s Women of the ELCA will have their Annual Rhubarb Festival “Curbside to Go” Drive Thru Meal on Wednesday, June 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Menu includes Festival Turkey Salad, rhubarb salad, roll and rhubarb dessert. Cost is $10. Please enter the Trinity Parking lot off of Fletcher and exit on Ash Street.  You can also enjoy your takeout lunch with friends in the Trinity Tent.(Weather permitting)

The Crookston Firefighters Association will hold an informational Open House for motivated candidates interested in fire/rescue and community service on Wednesday, June 9 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the North Fire Station located at 1921 Sahlstrom Drive in Crookston.

RiverView Health is offering a CPR class on Thursday, June 10 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the RiverView Home Care Building, 721 South Minnesota Street in Crookston. Cost is $50 for those needing certification and for those not needing certification the class is free. The Crookston Public Library will offer  Fish Painting (Gyotaku) on Wednesday, June 16 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Catherine from Red River State Recreation Area will teach you about the six senses of fish. Then, you’ll make your own fish art with Gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish painting. 

Trinity Lutheran Church will be celebrating Jean LaPlante’s Retirement on Wednesday, June 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot. There will be music and  food for purchase.

The Crookston Public Library will offer Drones at Castle Park  on Wednesday, June 23 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Castle Park. Chief Pilot Deb will show you what her drones can do in the STEM event. Rain date is June 30.

The Red Lake County Committee on Aging is hosting Senior Day on Friday, June 25th at 1:15 p.m. at the One and Only Oklee Hall. Senior Citizens will be entertained by The Lonely Lutherans. The Crookston Public Library will offer the event Bee Smart: The Lives of Pollinators  on Wednesday, July 14 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Steph will show us how our plants and food supply are kept alive by our pollinators. Find out what it takes to be a beekeeper and what equipment is used. 

UMC Teambackers Golf Classic presented by Altru Health Systems will be at the Minakwa Golf Course on Friday, July 16. Registration will start at 9:00 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 10:00 a.m. Teams will be handicapped and the five-member team’s total handicap must equal 60 or more. Participants must be 18 years of age or older or a high school graduate to play. The registration fee is $100 per participant. The Crookston Public Library will present Raptors Rule: Headwaters Science Center on Wednesday, July 28 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Get a close-up view of live raptors and learn about the characteristics that make raptors different from other birds, their habitats  what you can do to protect these creatures. 

 

CONTINUING ANNOUNCEMENTS

The City of Crookston has a survey to gauge knowledge, experiences and opinions of the City of Crookston. The responses will be used to gain a better understanding of how local residents feel about the activities and amenities currently offered, their representation for change within the community, and review areas of improvement. Twig and Branch Collection will be held the second and fourth Mondays of each month running May through October.  Place the materials on your curbside.  Branches must be cut in four-foot lengths and bundled in order for the crews to take them away.  Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away.  Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule pickup. Please note that leaves, grass and other compostable material must be in the clear City of Crookston bags and will be collected on your regular garbage collection day.

The Golden Link is serving noon lunch Monday through Friday, and Thursday evening dinner.. Cost is $6 and available to the public. Veterans meals are half price on the first Monday of the month. Call 281-3072 by 10:00 the day you plan to have lunch. 

The Crookston Friends of the Library meet the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

The Crookston Library Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:15. 

The Cove Youth Center in Crookston will be open Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30-6:30 p.m. for 7th-8th graders, and from 6:30-9:30 p.m. for 9th-12th graders. The facility is currently limited to 14 students at one time due to COVID-19. Students and parents should call ahead to check the availability of the youth center at 218-470-0149.

Polk County Public Health is available to answer questions about COVID 19, and help obtain essential services such as groceries, medications, and other daily items at 281-3385.  The phone is staffed Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Hugo’s Family Marketplace is offering shopping for seniors and people with illnesses from 6-7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 8-9 a.m. Saturdays, and Sundays during the COVID-19 pandemic.
