The Crookston Pirates Boys Hockey team hosted the #2 ranked team in the state in the Warroad Warriors on Friday night inside the Crookston Sports Center. Warroad came into the contest boasting a 14-0 record, and their perfect season would continue, as they controlled the game from start to finish on their way to a 16-0 win over the Pirates. “I’ve been coaching for a while, and that is one of the best High School Hockey teams I’ve ever seen,” said Pirates Head Coach Josh Hardy.

The Pirates battled for the first few minutes before Warroad got a goal at the 4:23 mark from Matthew Hard making the game 1-0 Warriors. A few minutes later at the 8:19 mark, Warroad scored another giving themselves a 2-0 lead, and shortly after that, Daimon Gardner made it 3-0 with 7:02 remaining in the first period. “I was a little disappointed in the first period,” said Pirates Head Coach Josh Hardy. “The score doesn’t matter, but our guys got down a little after we allowed a couple of goals and we started to kind of quit. I hadn’t seen that in a while from the guys so that was frustrating, and we have to be able to move on and have a next play mentality.” Warroad would add three more goals to take a 6-0 lead into the second period. The Warriors outshot Crookston 29-1 in the first period, with the one shot on goal for the Pirates coming from Carter Trudeau.

The Warriors didn’t let up, using their speed and skill to score two more goals within the first three minutes of the period. They would add three more throughout the period and take an 11-0 lead into the third period. There were a few penalties in the period and the Warriors capitalized while the Pirates could not. “Obviously the boys are frustrated and that’s good because it shows that they care,” said Pirates Head Coach Josh Hardy. “We had some opportunities tonight and couldn’t take advantage and they did. I told the boys after the game, it may not help, but some of those guys are going to play in the NHL one day. That’s how good they are.”

The final period was played with running time per Minnesota State High School League Rules as Warroad led by 6+ goals. Warroad began the third period in a similar fashion to the second period, scoring two goals within the first three minutes to take a 13-0 lead. Crookston had a few chances near the net but were unable to get one past the Warroad goalkeeper. The Warriors would add three more goals, one that was in the final seconds, bringing the final score to 16-0. “They flat out had a better skill set and I think it was a good realization for our guys with how much work they have to do,” said Pirates Head Coach Josh Hardy. “I think Coach Morgan said it best in the locker room after the game by saying that we lost to hockey players today, not to kids who play hockey. We have a couple of good opportunities coming up this week, so we have to be able to forget about this and be better on Tuesday.”

Warroad outshot the Pirates 66-8 in the contest. Jaren Bailey suffered the loss in net for the Pirates making 50 saves. Hampton Slukynsky earned the shutout win for the Warriors making all 8 saves.

With the loss, Crookston falls to 1-11-1 on the season and will take the ice again on Tuesday night when they travel to face Fergus Falls. The puck will drop at 7:15 p.m. and the game can be heard on KROX Radio. Warroad improves to 15-0 on the season with the win and will play the #1 ranked team in Class A tomorrow in Hermantown.
