NORTHLAND TO AWARD OVER $175,000 IN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

As part of an eight-million dollar appropriation awarded to the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities to grant Workforce Development Scholarships to students, Northland Community & Technical College will have more than $175,000 in scholarships available to award to new students entering high demand career fields. Each scholarship is valued at $2,500 with the award to be split between two semesters.

The Minnesota Workforce Development Scholarship initiative was launched as a pilot program in 2018 and expanded during the 2019 legislative session. The program was developed as a tool to help ease the critical shortage of skilled workers within the state by attracting students to high-demand career fields. Across the Minnesota State System, approximately 2,400 scholarships will be awarded in the 2020/2021 academic year.

“The Workforce Development Scholarships are making a huge impact for students pursuing high-demand careers in our region,” explains Lars Dyrud, Executive Director of the Northland Community & Technical College Foundation, “A $2,500 scholarship for the year covers nearly half of the average tuition and fees for full-time admission at Northland. With over 70 of these scholarships available for Minnesota residents next fall, we have a huge opportunity to draw students to these career fields.”

Qualifying high-demand program areas include Advanced Manufacturing, Agriculture, Early Childhood Education, Health Care Services, Information Technology, and Transportation. In addition, students must reside in Minnesota, enroll in a minimum of nine credits, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

For more information on eligible programs, or to apply online for a Workforce Development Scholarship go to Northland Community & Technical College Foundation website at nctcfoundation.com/scholarships/workforce-scholarships.
