UMC Women’s Basketball Outlast Nebraska-Kearney

Minnesota Crookston Women’s basketball picked up an impressive 71-59 season-opening win over University of Nebraska-Kearney of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) in a non-conference game played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Nebraska.

After turning the ball over to start the game, Minnesota Crookston conceded a lay-up falling behind 2-0 before Kylie Post (Fr., Corcoran) answered with a finish at the rim on the rim at the other end tying the game at 2-2. The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the season a few possessions later when Isieoma Odor (R-Sr., Bloomington) scored from inside giving UMC a 4-2 lead two minutes into the game. Half-way through the quarter, UMC took a 9-6 lead when Kylie Post scored another lay-up for the Golden Eagles. With Nebraska-Kearney leading 11-9, Abby Guidinger (Soph., Waukesha, WI) made a three-pointer giving UMC a 12-11 lead. Caitlin Michaelis (Sr., Marshfield, WI) capitalized off a Loper turnover with another triple pushing the Golden Eagles’ lead to 15-11. Nebraska Kearney responded with a three-pointer before Abby Guidinger closed the quarter with five-straight points to end the first quarter with UMC leading 20-14.
Kylea Praska (Fr., Thief River Falls) connected from beyond the arc to open the second quarter pushing the Minnesota Crookston lead to 23-14. Abby Guidinger knocked down another three-pointer with 8:02 left in the first-half giving UMC a 26-15 lead. A pair of Isieoma Odor free-throws expanded the Golden Eagles’ lead to 29-17, their largest of the game up to that point with 6:53 left in the second quarter. Minnesota Crookston continued to maintain a comfortable lead in the low-scoring second quarter with a late Lopers’ jump-shot cutting the UMC lead to 36-26 at halftime.
Nebraska-Kearney continued to play tough in the second half trimming the Golden Eagles’ lead down to a single-digit with a jumper made by Brooke Carlson (Fr., Elkhorn, NE) from the paint pulling the Lopers within 39-32 with 5:30 left in the third quarter. Nebraska-Kearney continued their comeback efforts pulling to within 39-34 with 3:48 to play in the third quarter. Caitlin Michaelis converted on a pair of free-throws on Minnesota Crookston’s next possession giving UMC a nine-point lead. The lead continued to grow late in the quarter with Isieoma Odor scoring the final three points of the quarter, all with free-throws, giving Minnesota Crookston a 50-36 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
In the final quarter, the Golden Eagles lead was trimmed to 11 before Abby Guidinger made a jump shot with 7:37 remaining in the game pushing the Minnesota Crookston lead back up to 11. Halfway through the fourth quarter, UMC continued to lead 54-45 before a lay-up made by Nebraska-Kearney’s Klaire Kirsch (Fr., Rapid City, SD) brought the Lopers to within 54-47 with 5:00 remaining. A Shiloh McCool (Pleasant Hill, IA) lay-up for Nebraska-Kearney continued the Lopers’ six-point run cutting their deficit to 54-49 before Abby Guidinger was fouled in transition, sending the sophomore to the free-throw line for Minnesota Crookston where she calmly buried both shots reestablishing a 7-point UMC lead. McCool scored quickly at the other end for the Lopers before Mary Burke (Fr., Virginia) knocked down a clutch three-pointer at the other end to push the Golden Eagles ahead 59-51. With 90-seconds left, Odor iced the game with a low-post bucket pushing Minnesota Crookston ahead 61-53. Mary Burke added one final three-pointer just for good measure adding some extra protection to the Golden Eagles catapulting UMC ahead 64-53. Nebraska cut the deficit to 64-57 after scoring four-straight points, but Minnesota Crookston’s Kylea Praska made both of her free-throws to ensure the Golden Eagles hung on for the 71-59 victory.

The Golden Eagles improve to 1-0 and return to the court on Saturday to continue their non-conference play in Wayne against another MIAA foe Northwest Missouri State at 3:30 p.m.  Nebraska-Kearney drops to 0-1.
