Fergus Falls Hillcrest Upends Crookston Boys Soccer

Fergus Falls Hillcrest scored a goal 50 seconds into the game and three goals in the first 10 minutes and cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Crookston Pirates in a Section 8A game played at the Crookston High School soccer field.

Hillcrest didn’t waste anytime as they scored a goal 50 seconds into the game for a quick 1-0 lead before the fans were able to get comfortable in their folding chairs.  “It was off a corner kick and when you let somebody loose inside the six they are going to score,” said Pirate Coach Don Cox.  Hillcrest added another goal a little over six minutes later for a 2-0 lead.  Both goals were scored by Iver Honningdal.  It only took two minutes for Hillcrest to score again with a goal from Erik Primavera for a 3-0 lead.  Less than five minutes after the third goal, Hillcrest added another goal, this time by Markus Fluge and 14:05 into the game Crookston trailed 4-0.  Crookston started to get some things going offensively and with less than five minutes left in the half, Crookston had a nice pass up to a streaking Jake Anderson.  Jake caught the pass and was one-on-one with the goalie and put a shot on net, but the Hillcrest goalie made the save.  “We had a nice pass and we couldn’t find the net,” said Coach Cox. “It was a nice play and it is too bad we couldn’t score.”  Less than a minute later, Hillcrest scored their fifth goal of the game.   To Crookston’s credit, they kept the offensive pressure going and snuck another pass to Anderson for another one-on-one opportunity and his kick went off the left post.  Nobody scored the rest of the half and Hillcrest took a 5-0 lead into halftime.  “We just can’t seem to find the magic combination to get some goals,” said Coach Cox. “We had three or four good opportunities and didn’t take advantage of them.  As the half went along we did a better job of closing the door on them.”
In the second half Hillcrest continued to dominate play for the first 20 minutes before they started to go deep into the bench, even pulling a kid warming up with the J.V. team on the field over to play with the Varsity.  Crookston had a couple opportunities with Jacob Brunelle and Anderson get the ball close to the goal, but Hillcrest’s defense held strong to earn the shutout and the 5-0 victory.  “They boys played hard and never gave up and that was nice to see,” said Coach Cox. “We have to find a way to score some goals, but after the first 10 minutes we played better and got stronger as the game went along.”
Crookston drops to 2-9 on the year and will travel to Hibbing on Friday.
