Alice Nephew – Obit

Alice Jean (Jagol) Nephew, 86, passed away in Fosston, MN on Friday, January 11, 2019. She was born to the late Alec and Anna Jagol on November 7, 1932, in Grassy Butte, ND. She attended school in Angus, MN. On June 30, 1951, Alice married the love of her life, the late Edward Oliver Nephew. Alice and Ed farmed in Fertile for many years and had two daughters, Debra Ann and Connie Jean, before they all relocated to the Iron Range. After Ed’s retirement from US Steel, Ed and Alice returned to Fertile and happily resided until their failing health required the caring assistance provided to both of them at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh, MN.

Alice loved Ed and her girls and “put up” with many “strays” they brought home, King–the notorious bear defender–earning the title of best dog ever. Alice enjoyed visiting with relatives and friends; attending music fests, especially at Rollag; playing various card games and she had a “mean” volleyball serve in her younger days!  Her bountiful vegetable gardens and beautiful flower beds produced multiple Fertile Fair ribbon winners.  Alice was a very good cook and enjoyed sharing her culinary skills. Homemade soups, breads, pies, cakes and cookies disappeared almost as quickly as they were made.  Alice’s chokecherry jam, pickled beets and garlic dill pickles are still sought-after recipes.

Alice is survived by her Daughter: Debra (Miles) Satterfield of Angier, NC; Grandchildren: Nathan (Barbara) Satterfield of Fuquay-Varina, NC and Jill (Chris) Price of Angier, NC; Great Grandsons: Tyler and Logan Reyes and Cayden and Colton Price; Brother: Edward (Arlene) Jagol of St. Hilaire, MN; Sisters: Joyce (Orlin) Lerol of Thief River Falls, MN; Evie Kalsnes of Forest Lake, MN; Arlene Tholkes of Columbia Heights, MN; Donna Holmes of Biwabik, MN and Sandy (Greg) Johnson of Warren, MN; Sisters-in-law: Ursula Jagol, Germany; Margie Coan, Goodridge, MN and Jean Jagol, Virginia, MN; Brother-in-law: Denny Nicholson, Hugo, MN.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ed, on November 20, 2018; Daughter: Connie; Parents: Alec and Anna Jagol; Brothers: Alvin, Joe and Duane Jagol; Sisters: Rosie Nicholson and Mary “Jane” Jorgenson; Brothers-in-law: Harold Kalsnes, Ray Olson, Alton Kalsnes and George “Hillman” Jorgenson.

In remembrance of Alice and in lieu of memorials, Debbie suggests that you place a wind chime at your home to let the wind softly call her memory to your heart and mind.

The funeral is 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN, with Pastor Dan Morton officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, January 18, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Erikson-Vik-Ganje Funeral Home in Fertile, MN, and one hour before the funeral at the church. Burial will take place at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile, MN.
