PIRATE BOY’S BASKETBALL SHOOTS WELL IN 66-55 WIN OVER STEPHEN-ARGYLE

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Basketball team shot the three-pointer well and got a big game out of Hunter Nicholas down low to beat the Stephen-Argyle Storm on Tuesday night 66-55.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston got off to a quick 11-4 lead with six points from Hunter Nicholas, a layup from Reggie Winjum, and a three from Ryan Abeld. Stephen-Argyle would respond with a three from Shay Setterholm and take a timeout trailing 11-7 with 14:10 remaining in the half. The Storm would knock down another three and get within one point, but the Pirates would re-extend the lead with Hunter Nicholas doing damage inside, giving Crookston an 18-13 edge with 7:56 on the clock. Stephen-Argyle got good bench production in the first half, with Jackson Kekke and Blaine Smith each pouring in a three-pointer to keep the Storm afloat and prevent the Pirates from building a big lead. Crookston would take a timeout in front 24-20 with 2:17 until halftime, and it seemed to work, as they would end the half on a 6-3 run to take a 30-23 lead into the break. Hunter Nicholas led the way for Crookston scoring 14 first-half points, while Stephen-Argyle had seven different players score, and freshman Shay Setterholm’s 5 points were the most for them.

SECOND HALF –
The Storm came out and Will McGlynn went on a 5-0 run of his own to make it 30-28 Crookston, and after a couple of more scores from Hunter Nicholas, the Pirates led 34-30 with 14:34 remaining. The Pirates would open things up from their going on a 13-4 run to take a 47-34 lead with 11:51 left to play. Tanner Giese would knock down a three and Ryan Abeld would splash in two of his own to highlight the run. Stephen-Argyle would step up and answer the run keeping the game close over the next few minutes. A pivotal moment came with 8:25 remaining as Tanner Giese and Hunter Nicholas each picked up their fourth foul forcing them to the bench with a 49-39 lead. Crookston would have plenty of other players step up to keep the Pirates in front, including Isaac Thomforde who helped by scoring 8 second-half points, and Caden Boike who got a steal, raced the other way, and laid a shot up and in to give Crookston a 60-48 lead with 3:35 remaining. Still, Stephen-Argyle refused to quit, and would Will McGlynn who had a fantastic game, would help the Storm go on a 7-0 run to pull them within five points trailing 60-55 with 1:30 left in the game. The Pirates were able to stay in front the rest of the game however, scoring the last six points on layups from Ryan Abeld and Hunter Nicholas, to secure the win 66-55.

Crookston is now 6-8 with the win. Stephen-Argyle falls to 4-7 with the loss.
