GREEN WAVE RALLY LATE TO BEAT CROOKSTON PIRATE SOFTBALL 8-5

The Crookston Pirate Softball team battled the wind, rain, and elements on Wednesday afternoon against the East Grand Forks Green Wave. The Pirates scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a big lead, but it wasn’t enough, as the Green Wave scored the final seven runs of the game for an 8-5 win.

FIRST INNING
Emily Bowman and Madi Bruggeman would draw leadoff walks to start the top of the first for Crookston, and after a strikeout, Reese Swanson would also walk to load the bases. EGF starting pitcher Karlee Walsh would dig in and strike out the next two hitters to leave the bases loaded and keep the Pirates off the scoreboard. The Green Wave would get a two out double from Walsh in the bottom of the inning, but Pirates starting pitcher Emily Bowman would get a ground out to shortstop to end the inning, sending us into the second tied at 0-0.

SECOND INNING
Both teams would go scoreless in the second inning. Crookston got a walk from Alex Luna, and the Green Wave got a two out single from Shelby Bruggeman but that was all.

THIRD INNING
The Pirates picked up two more free passes in the top of the third inning as Madi Bruggeman and Reese Swanson both reached and put runners on second and third base with one out. EGF would once again get out of the jam however and pick up back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

East Grand Forks would get their leadoff hitter on base in the bottom of the third on a hit by pitch, and after two outs, another hit batter put runners on first and second base. Emma Marcott would then drive a single to center field to score a run and give the Green Wave a 1-0 lead after three innings of play.

FOURTH INNING
The Pirates would get Rilynn Aubol aboard on a hit-by-pitch in the top of the fourth inning, but nothing more. The Green Wave got a couple of runners on base in the bottom of the frame from a hit by pitch and a walk, but once again, Emily Bowman got out of the inning with a lineout to Madi Bruggeman at shortstop, ending the inning and keeping the deficit at 1-0.

FIFTH INNING
The fifth inning was where both teams got their offenses going. Madi Bruggeman, Madi Abrams, and Reese Swanson all walked to start the inning and load the bases with nobody out. A Green Wave error then tied the game at 1-1, and Leah Johanneck then hit an infield single to put the Pirates in front 2-1. With the bases loaded and still nobody out, Alex Luna would draw a walk to bring in another run. After a strikeout, Emilee Tate walked to score a run, and a groundout from Emily Bowman brought home the fifth run of the inning to give Crookston a 5-1 lead. East Grand Forks would finally get out of the inning but have work to do offensively.

The Green Wave’s first three hitters reached in the inning on two hit by pitches and a double from Karlee Walsh scoring a run and cutting the Pirates lead to 5-2. After a lineout and another hit batter, Shelby Bruggeman singled to score two runs and pull East Grand Forks within one run. Emily Bowman would get the next two hitters out, and Crookston’s lead was preserved for the time being at 5-4 after five innings of play.

SIXTH INNING
Crookston got two runners on base with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, but a strikeout ended the inning and kept the Green Wave behind by just one run. The Green Wave reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a big inning. A leadoff walk and a one out double from Karlee Walsh tied the game at 5-5, and Emma Marcott followed that up with a double of her own to give East Grand Forks a 6-5 lead. The Green Wave would score two more runs in the inning, and take an 8-5 edge into the final frame.

SEVENTH INNING
Crookston got a one out walk from Emilee Tate in the top of the seventh inning, but Karlee Walsh closed the door for East Grand Forks and the Green Wave would win the game 8-5.

East Grand Forks improves to 4-9 on the season with the win. Crookston falls to 2-14 on the season with the loss.
