Fall Family Fun: Animals on the Move
Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 2:00 p.m.-2:45 p.m.
Meet at the council ring outside the Lakeside Museum on the picnic grounds
Kids, bring your families along and let us explore how plants and animals are on the move. Winter is coming, and animals and plants are making lots of preparations!
Suppertime Stroll: Fall on the Mary Lake Trail
Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Meet outside Forest Inn (across from Douglas Lodge)
As fall arrives, plants and animals are already looking ahead to winter. Join the naturalist on a hike along the Mary Lake Trail and explore the changes of the season. The trail distance is approximately 1 ½ miles and includes some uneven terrain.
Fire Tower Hike
Monday, September 25, 2023, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Meet outside of Douglas Lodge
Come along for a nice fall walk to the Aiton Heights Fire Tower. Learn about the history of fires fire towers, and enjoy the changing leaves. Conclude the interpretive walk by climbing the building at your leisure before returning to Douglas Lodge.
NOTES: The hike is about 3 miles round trip, with some uneven terrain. Wear appropriate clothing/footwear and pack water for the trek.
Five Facts in Five Minutes: Fall Colors

Signs of Fall on Schoolcraft Trail

Meet under the porch at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center
It’s a great time of the year for hiking and searching for signs of fall. Walk along the Schoolcraft Trail with views of Lake Itasca and tall pines as we explore plants and animals, preparing for the upcoming winter season. The trail distance is two miles round trip.

Only have a minute to learn about Itasca State Park? As you visit the Headwaters of the Mississippi River, stop by the nature cart and learn about research at the University of Minnesota’s Biological Station at Itasca.
