BARNESVILLE SCORED 51 FIRST HALF POINTS TO BEAT PIRATE GIRL’S BASKETBALL

The Barnesville Trojans used solid defense, fantastic passing, and a run-and-gun offense to beat the Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team 73-43 in a Section 8AA matchup at the Crookston High School Gymnasium.

FIRST HALF-
Barnesville, a team that has played seven of its eight games in January on the road, is no stranger to starting strong on the road as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead with a three-pointer from Abi John, a three-point play from Ava Follingstad, and a basket from Lexi Hoeft. Crookston stopped the run with an Isabelle Smith three-pointer, but Barnesville responded with a 7-0 run led by John’s four points for a 15-5 lead. Barnesville built a 23-9 lead with 11:27 left in the half before Crookston went on a 9-0 run behind a Naomi Johnson three-pointer and two points apiece from Chloe Boll, Grace Boll, and Brooklyn Waldal to get within a 23-18 deficit halfway through the half. Barnesville finished the final eight minutes of the half on a 28-5 run, including ending the half on a 15-0 run. Six different Trojan players scored in the run with 12 points, on four three-pointers, from Anika Cossette leading the way for a 51-23 lead going into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Barnesville had a good start to the second half as Ava Follingstad converted a three-point play. Barnesville led 61-33 when John scored five points, Macie Pauna added a free throw, Lexi Hoeft added a basket, and with 9:30 minutes left in the game, John added another basket for a 73-35 lead. With nine minutes remaining in the game and the Trojans leading by more than 35 points, running time began. Crookston took advantage of Barnesville going to the bench as Grace Boll scored four points, Smith added two free throws, and Waldal added a basket. Even without Barnesville scoring a point in the final nine minutes, they cruised to a 73-43 victory.
Crookston only shot two free throws and made both of them.  Barnesville made 10 of 18 free throws.

Crookston drops to 3-13 on the year and will travel to Roseau on Tuesday for another Section 8AA matchup. Barnesville improves to 10-5 on the year and will travel to Breckenridge on Tuesday.
