United Valley Bank is having its Annual Back-to-School Snack Drive.  Bring your snack donations to the  United Valley Bank lobby now through September 30, and they’ll match all donations received. The Grace Community Food Shelf in Erskine is sponsoring a free Produce Drop today starting at 8:30 a.m. until the produce is gone. Crookston Youth Basketball Association Mini Pirates Intro to Basketball Academy

The Crookston Youth Basketball Association will present a Mini Pirates Intro to Basketball Academy for ages 4 to 6 at the Crookston High School gym. This fun, 5-week introductory program will use simple drills, fundamental instruction, and exciting games to teach the basics of basketball. It will be held on Sundays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., starting September 6th and running through October 4th. Cost is $15 and includes a T-shirt. Parents’ Education Night Event, Healthy Eating for Busy Families, will be on Wednesday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 1214 University Avenue in Crookston, right next door to Hugo’s Family Marketplace. The guest speaker will be Rachel Rudolph, clinical dietitian at Riverview Healthcare. She will be sharing practical strategies and tips for feeding your kids healthy foods amid your family’s busy schedule. Her presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. Register now for the Benedictine Foundation-Crookston Glow Golf Tournament Fundraiser that will be held on Saturday, September 12, at Minakwa Golf Course in Crookston. 18 (4-person) teams maximum, non-golfers welcome. Polk County Historical Society Pioneer Day

Pioneer Day, sponsored by the Polk County Historical Society, will be Sunday, September 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Polk County Museum. The event opens with lunch being served, including pie. Dean and Peggy will perform at 12:30 p.m. in the Centennial Building. Project: Constellation will perform Scandinavian Music at 1:30 p.m., and The Woodpicks will perform at 3:00 p.m. in the Hafslo Church. Point Paradise Stables will provide wagon rides from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Ongoing activities will be a display of Hit and Miss engines, sawmill and wheat weaving demonstrations, lefse making demo with Alvern Wentzel and Carol Solheim, and children’s activities. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. This activity is made possible, in part, by a grant provided by the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council, with funds from the Minnesota State Legislature general fund.

21st Annual Harvest Festival

The 21st Annual Harvest Festival will be on Sunday, September 13 , at the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Museum in Crookston. Harvesting sugarbeets with vintage equipment will be at 11:00 a.m. and a tractor pull at noon. There will be many other items on display. A food truck will be available for lunch. Free admission.

RiverView Health’s A Matter of Balance

RiverView Health is offering A Matter of Balance, a program designed to help older adults manage concerns about falls and stay active. The program meets once a week for eight weeks and is offered at no cost. Classes will be held every Monday from September 14 through November 2, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Conference Room 3 at RiverView Health, located at 323 South Minnesota Street in Crookston. The Crookston Eagles Club will serve $8 burger baskets on Monday, September 14, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Each basket includes a 1/3 pound burger or cheeseburger and fries. Burger toppings include ketchup, pickles, mustard, and raw or fried onions. The Eagles Auxiliary will meet at 7:00 p.m.

Highland Band and Orchestra Orientation

Highland Band and Orchestra Orientation will be held on Monday, September 14. The 4th-grade orchestra will meet at 6:00 p.m., and the 5th-grade band will meet at 7:00 p.m. They will be able to get sized for string instruments, sign instrument agreements, and parents can meet the music teachers that night. Join the Crookston Public Library for Cider Making 101 on Tuesday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m. Hobbyist Lonnie Peck will educate attendees about making homemade apple cider and will provide many useful ideas for using up your apples, including a variety of things you can make with a cider base, and he will give a live demonstration.

Lester Wilkens Benefit Dinner

A Benefit for Lester Wilkens will be held on Thursday, September 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Crookston Golden Link. A free-will-offering meal will include a ham steak dinner, scalloped potatoes, yams/corn, a dinner roll, and a Dixie cup of ice cream. Lester Wilkens suffered a massive stroke on July 24, and all proceeds will go to help pay for medical expenses.

Body Contact/Battle Camp

A Body Contact/Battle Camp for 2nd-year peewees and bantams will be held at the Crookston Sports Center. This is a 4-week camp held from 7:15 to 8:15, starting on Thursday, September 17, that focuses on building confidence, physicality, and becoming a more complete player.  Players will learn how to safely give and receive a check, protect themselves on the boards, build confidence with body contact, angle, puck protect and more. Cost is $60 per player. The camp is open to Crookston and the surrounding area and will be coached by Coach Brady Heppner and UMC hockey players. Women of the ELCA Northwestern Minnesota Synodical Women’s Organization 38th Annual Convention

Women of the E.L.C.A. Northwestern Minnesota Synodical Women’s Organization will hold their 38th Annual Convention on September 18 and 19 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston. The keynote speaker will be inspirational Christian speaker and author Gaye Lindfors, a native of Climax. There will be breakout sessions and button up your faith wall hanging project. 21st Annual Lillian Bridgeford 4-Person Memorial Scramble

The 21st Annual Lillian Bridgeford 4-Person Memorial Scramble will be Saturday, September 19, at the Minakwa Golf Course in Crookston. Please be there by 10:00 a.m., tee-off at 10:30 a.m. There is a minimum donation of $80 per player for 18 holes of golf, lunch, and a chance to win great prizes. There will also be a $10,000 hole-in-one challenge. R.S.V.P is greatly appreciated, as it is a big help in planning. Safe Kids Grand Forks Car Seat Checkup

Safe Kids Grand Forks will have a free car seat/booster checkup on Saturday, September 26, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Polk County Public Health, 816 Marin Avenue in Crookston. Stop by this free event to have a certified child passenger safety technician check your car seats for proper installation and make sure every child is using the appropriate car seat for their size.  This checkup event is open to the public with no appointment needed. Options Outdoors 31st Annual Deer Hunt for people with disabilities will be October 15-17 at Rydell National Wildlife Refuge, located south of Mentor. People with disabilities or those experiencing the frailties of aging can apply. Participants are provided with a blind site and assistance.
