SACRED HEART BASEBALL WINS SUB-SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP

The Sacred Heart Eagles beat the Northern Freeze 8-2 in the second round and beat Ada-Borup-West 12-1 in five innings to win the West Sub-Section of the Section 8A Baseball tournament at Robert Norland Field in Fertile.

GAME ONE

FIRST INNING
Northern Freeze’s leadoff batter Sawyer Torgerson led off the game with a double. The next batter bunted, and Sacred Heart pitcher Josiah Sundby fielded the ball and threw to third base to get the lead runner for the first out of the inning. The next batter reached on an error. A throw to the pitcher was off the mark, and the Freeze tried to score, but David Larson threw the ball to Josiah Sundby, who was covering at home plate, and Sundby tagged out the Freeze player, trying to score for the second out. The Freeze runner at second tried to advance to third on the play and was thrown out for the third out of the inning.
The first two Sacred Heart batters were retired before Parker Erickson singled and advanced to second base on an error. Jake Satterlund doubled to score a run for a 1-0 lead. Ben Wharam singled to score another run and Sacred Heart led 2-0 after the first inning.

SECOND INNING
The Freeze were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the second inning. Sacred Heart’s David Larson blasted a line drive over the left-center field fence for a 3-0 lead.

THIRD INNING
The Freeze were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the third inning. Sacred Heart added more runs in the bottom of the inning when Erickson led off with a single and stole second base. After an out, Wharam doubled to score a run. Nick Satterlund singled to score another run for a 5-0 lead.

FOURTH INNING
The Freeze pitcher, Torgerson struck out but reached on a wild pitch to start the inning. The next batter was retired, and Torgerson advanced to third on a wild pitch. Eizen Olson walked before he was caught stealing at second base when Sacred Heart had a pitchout on the play. The next batter struck out.
Sacred Heart’s Elliot Arntson doubled with one out, Josiah Sundby walked, and Erickson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jake Satterlund walked to score a run, and the Eagles took a 6-0 lead.

FIFTH INNING
The Freeze were retired in 1-2-3 fashion. Sacred Heart’s Isaac Sundby singled with one out and stole second and third base. The next two batters struck out.

SIXTH INNING
Northern Freeze’s Kelby Augustine singled with one out for the second Freeze hit of the game before the next two batters were retired. Sacred Heart added more runs in the bottom of the inning when Josiah Sundby walked and advanced to second base on a balk. After an out, Jake Satterlund doubled to score a run. Wharam singled to score another run for an 8-0 lead.

SEVENTH INNING
The Northern Freeze didn’t go down without a fight as Cade Knutsen walked with one out. Isaak Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice and Landon Nordby singled to load the bases. The next batter popped out to the catcher before Alex Bray singled to score a run. Another run scored on an error to bring the Freeze within an 8-2 deficit. The next batter was retired, and Sacred Heart won the game 8-2.

Sacred Heart improves to 16-3 on the year and will play the winner of Red Lake County and Ada-Borup-West at 3:00 PM. Northern Freeze drops to 8-9 on the year and will take on the loser of Red Lake County and Ada-Borup-West in a loser-out game at 5:30 PM.

GAME TWO – WEST SUB-SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP

FIRST INNING
ABW’s first batter was retired before Cameron Spaeth singled. The next two batters were retired.
Sacred Heart blew the game open in the bottom of the inning as Elliot Arntson led off with a double, Josiah Sundby walked and Parker Erickson singled to score two runs. Jake Satterlund singled, and Ben Wharam scored a run on a sacrifice fly. Nick Satterlund walked, and David Larson singled. A run scored on a wild pitch and another run scored on an error for a 5-0 lead. Isaac Sundby singled to score another run for a 6-0 lead.

SECOND INNING
The first two ABW batters struck out before Cannon Anderson reached on an error. The next batter was retired.
Sacred Heart added more runs in the bottom of the inning when Josiah Sundby led off with a double. After an out, Jake Satterlund reached on a fielder’s choice, and runners were at first and third base. Wharam singled to score a run. Nick Satterlund walked, and a run scored on a wild pitch, and another run scored on a stolen base. Larson followed with a blast over the left field fence for a two run home run for an 11-0 lead.

THIRD INNING
ABW’s first two batters were retired before Spaeth singled, advanced to second base on a balk, and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Austin McCraven singled to score a run to get within an 11-1 deficit.
Sacred Heart was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.

FOURTH INNING
The first ABW batter walked before the next three batters were retired. Sacred Heart added another run in the bottom of the inning when Jake Satterlund led off with a triple and scored on a Wharam ground out for a 12-1 lead.

FIFTH INNING
ABW was retired in 1-2-3 fashion, and Sacred Heart won the game 12-1 in five innings.

Sacred Heart improves to 17-3 on the year and will play Fosston at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Jim Karn Field in Crookston. You can hear the game on KROX Radio with a RiverView Health pre-game show at 3:30 PM. Ada-Borup-West drops to 15-5 on the year and will play Mahnomen/Waubun in a loser-out game at 1:30 PM.
