Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball comes up short in loss to DGF in Section 8AA tourney

With the game tied at 61-61, the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels went on a 14-0 run to beat the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team 59-51 in the Section 8AA tournament first-round game played at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School in Glyndon.

FIRST HALF –
DGF jumped out to a 4-0 lead with baskets from Mason Bjerken and Grant Anderson. Crookston picked up the defense, and a little over three minutes into the game, Tyler Michaelson nailed a three-pointer. The Rebels’ Bjerken answered with a basket before Michaelson hit another three-pointer to tie the game at 6-6. DGF’s Quincy Cox scored the next five points, and the back-and-forth battle continued as Crookston’s Matthew Contreras made a banked three-pointer before Nicholas grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to tie the game at 11-1 with 8:43 left in the half. As they did the entire first half, DGF had an answer with a three-pointer from Grant Anderson before Michaelson banked a runner off the glass. After a Rebel basket, Crookston’s Nicholas made a three-pointer to tie the game at 16-16. DGF made a basket before Crookston’s Contreras made another three-pointer for a 19-18. The teams exchanged the lead on six straight possessions before Crookston’s Michaelson hit another three-pointer for a 27-25 Crookston lead with 2:08 left in the half. DGF ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 30-27 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
DGF started the second half with a Grant Anderson basket. Crookston’s Michaelson answered with a three-pointer, and after a Rebel basket, Michaelson made a basket. The back-and-forth battle continued with a Rebel three-pointer from Quincy Cox, and the Pirates’ Winjum and Nicholas had baskets to get within a 37-36 deficit four minutes into the half. A few minutes later, Crookston’s Michaelson made a basket to tie the game at 41-41 with 12:42 to go. Crookston started settling for quick three-pointers over the next eight minutes, went 0-12 from long distance, and was outscored 14-0 by the Rebels with four different players scoring for a 57-43 lead with over three minutes remaining. Crookston finally made a three-pointer when Winjum dialed long-distance with 2:35 to go. Michaelson added another three-pointer as the senior had 21 points in the game. Crookston kept the run going as Winjum made a layup and brought the Pirates within a 57-51 with 43 seconds remaining in the game. Crookston fouled and the Rebels missed the front end of the bonus and Crookston had a three-point shot go off the rim and the Rebels grabbed the rebound, and Kade Swenson made two free throws to put the icing on the cake for the Rebels as they won the game 59-51.

Crookston’s season ends with a record of 9-18, and they say goodbye to the following seniors: Jack Everett, Rylan Lubarski, Tyler Michaelson, Matthew Contreras, Bradyn Pederson, Michael Deng, and Hunter Nicholas. DGF snaps its eight-game losing streak after finally getting healthy again, improving to 16-11 on the year. It will play Barnesville on Saturday.
