The Crookston Pirate Girls Golf team’s Dani Boyle, a junior, shot a 92 (20 over par) and is tied for 45th place after her first round at the Minnesota State High School League State Class AA Girls Golf Tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course near Jordan.
Dani had a solid front nine and was two over after the first two holes. On the third and fourth hole, she had back-to-back double bogey’s and was six-over par through four holes. Dani settled in the rest of the way and played the final five holes with two pars and three bogeys and was nine over par through the first nine holes. “With the conditions, windy and rainy, she had a good front nine,” said Coach Jeff Perreault. “The round started rough off the first tee and she hit the ball into the pond, but she had a nice recovery and played some pretty good golf.”
On the nine holes, Dani continued her consistent play with a bogey, double bogey and back-to-back bogey’s before she parred the 14th hole and was 14 over par through 14 holes. The long course (over 5,000 yards) and the rain seemed to take a toll on Boyle on the next two holes because she had a double bogey followed by a triple bogey and was 19 over through 16 holes. She finished strong with a bogey and a par on a difficult 18th hole and finished with a score of 92 (20 over par) on her first round. “The back nine is a challenging part of the course. You have to hit good shots and get over water,” said Coach Perreault. “She had a tough time on the 16th hole, but shook it off and finished strong and overall she hit a lot of nice shots. Her putter wasn’t her friend today and the greens were fast yesterday in the practice round and after the rain they were slower today.”
Dani is in 45th place out of 87 golfers and will wrap up her trip to the state golf tournament with her second round on Wednesday. “Dani has a goal of finishing in the top 50 and she is capable of shooting in the 80’s,” said Coach Perreault. “We just want her to play better tomorrow than she did today and that isn’t easy on a challenging course like this one.”
Sophia Yoemans of Red Wing turned in the top individual score with a three-under-par 69, four strokes better than her teammate Leah Herzog and Minnewaska Area/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s Jacqueline Gossen with 73’s.
Minnewaska Area/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa leads the team standings after they shot a 313 (25 over par). Red Wing is in second place with a 319 and Detroit Lakes is third with a 325.
