Frederick J. Groth Jr. – OBIT

Frederick J. Groth Jr., 80, Fertile, MN, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025 at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile.

Frederick J. Groth, Jr. was born on May 25, 1944, in Racine, WI. He attended William Horlick High School, graduating in 1962. While working for J.I. Case, he met his wife, Lillian Kangas, and they married in 1967. He completed his Associate of Arts degree and apprenticeship in carpentry and cabinet making from Gateway Technical Institute.

In 1977 Fred and Lil moved their family to Wolf Lake, MN. Fred worked throughout the upper Midwest, as a sole proprietor, or as part of a team on larger projects. Fred completed many new construction homes, remodels, and smaller projects throughout the Wolf Lake area. Fred and Lil had dozens of nephews and nieces, setting the bar high for how to be an aunt or an uncle. Their home was the place for nephews, nieces, and neighbor kids to spend the weekends having movie nights, game nights, playing hide & seek or board games, eating spaghetti, and making malts. Fred also loved fishing, spending many days on area lakes with Lil and anyone fortunate to join them.
As a widower, Fred focused on helping his daughters with their households; acting as babysitter, handyman, fishing guide, cook, bottlewasher, father, and fun maker. He will be remembered fondly for seeking ways to bring a smile to your face; whether by a gift, a goofy look, a questionable joke, or simply trying to help.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian (Kangas) Groth; parents, Fred and Albertha Groth; and brother, David Groth. He is survived by his daughters, LeAnn Groth and Tracy (Groth) Johnson; son-in-law, Jamie Johnson; his grandchildren, Caidyn, Teegyn, and Aubryn Johnson; his sister, Karen Groth; his brother, Bob Groth (partner Bill Hansen); and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be designated to his grandchildren.

Fred has roots in many communities; as such, we will have several celebrations of his life.

Fred’s family will be holding a Celebration of Life from 4 – 6 PM on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, for friends, family, and staff at the Activity Center in Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile, MN.

Another Celebration of Life will be held in Minneapolis, MN at the Moose on Monroe from 5 – 8 PM on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

And before he is in his final resting place next to Lillian, a Breakfast Memorial will be held at the Wolf Lake Community Center on Sunday, August 3, 2025, from 10 AM – 12 PM.
