The Moorhead Spuds had tremendous team speed and athleticism and they showed it off in a 6-0 victory over the Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team in a game played at KROX Radio Stadium in Crookston.
FIRST HALF –
The Moorhead Spuds used their speed and size to dominate the first half and had several shots on goal in the first minutes of the game. 9:50 into the game, Moorhead’s outstanding Freshman, Quinn Erickson had the ball about 15 yards out and placed a perfectly placed line drive kick into the net to give the Spuds a 1-0 lead. Moorhead continued to control play as they had another quality scoring chance with 25 minutes left in the half, but Pirate goal keeper Shyuh Burnette made the save. 30 seconds later, Moorhead subbed six players, and their play didn’t drop off as a little over two minutes went off the clock before Kate Shirley got a beautiful pass in front of the goal from Erickson, and Shirley kicked the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead halfway through the half. 90 seconds later, the Spuds flew behind the Pirate defenders and had a shot hit the left post, and the rebound bounced in front of the net, and a Moorhead kick was stopped by a diving Burnette to keep the game at a 2-0 Spud lead. A little over a minute later, Moorhead had another point-blank shot and missed wide left.
Halfway through the half, Moorhead had 17 shots with nine on goal. With 17 minutes left, Moorhead had another shot all alone in front of the net, and Burnette made another save. Moorhead finally was able to get another one into the net as Erickson sped past the Pirate defense and had a breakaway and punched it into the net for a 3-0 lead with 13 minutes left in the half. Three minutes later, the Spuds had a two-on-one, and a pass went in front of the Pirate goal, and the kick went over the net, and the game remained a 3-0 score the rest of the way into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Moorhead had a quick start to the second half as Quinn Erickson recorded a hat trick as she used her speed to get an open shot in front of the net and blasted another shot into the net for a 4-0 lead less than seven minutes into the half.
Five minutes later, Moorhead’s Erickson got behind the defense again and had a perfectly placed kick into the net for her fourth goal with 27 minutes left in the game.
Four minutes later, Moorhead struck again with a nice cross from the corner, and Harper Wilson got the ball in front of their net and kicked for a 6-0 lead with 24 minutes remaining.
Moorhead continued to pepper the Pirate goal and ended the game with 46 shots and 28 of them on goal on their way to a 6-0 victory.
Crookston drops to 0-1 on the year and will play at St. John’s Prep in Collegeville on Thursday. Moorhead improves to 1-2 on the year.
