The Stephen-Argyle Storm football team had an impressive defensive effort and dominated the second half while only allowing 12 yards of offense in the half on their way to beat the Goodridge-Grygla 6-0 in a Section 8 9-Man battle in Argyle.
1st Quarter –
Stephen-Argyle started the game with the ball. On the first offensive play of the game, the Storm fumbled the ball on the handoff and Goodridge-Grgyla Chargers recovered the ball at the Storm 37 yard line. The Chargers ran three plays for nine yards and went for it on fourth and one and Shay Jacobson ran for two yards and a first down. Three plays later the Chargers recorded another first down. The next three plays only covered one yard and on a fourth and goal at the seven yard line. The Chargers tried a passing play and Landon Nordby found Gus Jones for a six yard play, which was short by a yard and a turnover on downs.
The Storm had a run of seven yards from Raydon Woinarowicz and Shay Setterholm ran for 12 yards for a first down and a good start to the drive. On a fourth down and two play, the Storm got four yards on a Kellen Johnson run for another first down. After two running plays of three yards each, there was an incomplete pass and they punted the ball.
Goodridge-Grgyla ran five plays before they had to punt for the first time in the game and the first quarter was complete and the game was tied at 0-0.
2nd Quarter –
The Storm’s first drive of the second quarter looked promising after a 17 yard run by Setterholm, but a loss of two and a pair of incomplete pases forced the Storm to punt again. Goodrdge-Grgyla ran two plays before dropping back to pass and the Storm put pressure on the quarterback and the ball was under thrown. The Storm’s Setterholm intercepted the pass to give Stephen-Argyle the ball back.
The Storm had a good start to the drive with a first down after gaining 12 yards on two plays. On the next play, the Storm picked up a 10-yard holding penalty. A run of five yards and an incomplete pass led to a third and long, but a penalty was called on the play and that moved back the Storm another 15-yards and it was a third and 32-yard situation. After a gain of nine yards the Storm punted.
Goodridge-Grgyla followed up with two carries before they fumbled and the Storm recovered the ball. Neither team was able to get much going the rest of the half and the game was scoreless going into halftime.
3rd Quarter –
The third quarter started with Goodridge-Grygla losing a yard on three plays before they lined up to punt at the Storm 48 yard line. They decided to try a fake punt and the pass was incomplete. The Storm got the ball on the turnover on downs. The Storm ran six plays and slowly moved the ball down the field before throwing an interception. It was this point in the game that the Storm defense flexed its muscles as they completely dominated the rest of the game. The Chargers had a three-and-out and punted the ball. Stephen-Argyle had the ball at their own 30-yard line and ran 15 plays while recording four first downs and got the ball down to a fourth and goal on the one yard line. The Chargers stopped the Storm run and got the ball at their own yard line after a turnover on downs.
4th Quarter –
The Chargers had another three and out to start the fourth quarter after starting at their own one yard line. The punt was 33 yards and the Storm took over with the ball at the Charger 35 yard line with 9:08 left in the game. The Storm had a run of seven yards and after an incomplete pass, they had a running play of eight yards for another first down. Two more carries covered 11 yards for another first down. The Storm kept the ball moving and continued to move the ball down to the one yard line where the Storm had a fourth and one at the one yard line. The Storm ran the ball and were stopped shy of the goal line, but there was a chance of getting the first down without getting a touchdown and the chains were stretched out and the officials awarded Stephen-Argyle the first down. Setterholm scored on the next play on a quarterback keeper with 5:23 left in the game for a 6-0 lead. The two-point conversion failed and the Storm led 6-0.
The Chargers started their next drive on their own 35-yard line. The first three plays spanned 10-yards for a first down. The next two plays equaled no gain before the next two Charger passes were incomplete for a turnover on downs. The Storm ran two plays for a first down and two plays later, they took a knee and held on for a 6-0 victory.
Stephen-Argyle improves to 3-1 on the year and will host Fosston on Friday, September 19. Goodridge-Grgyla drops to 3-1 on the year and will be at Kittson County Central on Friday, September 19.
