The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team won the first four individual matches to beat Wadena-Deer Creek in the day’s first match. After the rain delay, the Pirates won 5-2 and lost 4-3 to Staples-Motley in a pair of matches played at Thief River Falls.
CROOKSTON vs WADENA-DEER CREEK
Crookston won the first four matches before rain delayed the match. The match victory before the rain delay was because the Pirates won two singles and two doubles matches. Lauren Tull continues her solid play as they shut out her opponent for the second straight match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Maybe the match’s highlight was when freshman Kaylen Bedard got to play her first varsity match of her career. She played at fourth singles and won 6-2, 6-3. Bedard filled the line-up after Ashlyn Bailey was out with an injury.
The Pirate second doubles team of Madelyn Anderson and Logan Brekken continued their winning ways as they won a hard-fought back-and-forth battle in the first set 7-5 and cruised to a 6-1 second set victory to get the win. The third doubles team of Grace Boll and Lucy Smith won their match 6-3, 6-2, and Crookston led 4-0 to earn the team victory with three matches remaining.
After the rain delay, they finished the three remaining matches. Crookston won the first singles match, and Emelia Hoerner had an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The two Pirate losses were thrilling matches that couldn’t have been much closer. At second singles, Ava Martin battled and lost the first set 7-6 (7-4 in the tie-breaker) and 7-6 (9-7 in the tie-breaker). Crookston’s first doubles had a three-setter after winning the first set 7-5, the Wolverine duo won 6-2 to force the final set with a super tie-breaker. WDC outlasted the Pirates 10-7 to win the match, but Crookston won the match as a team by a 5-2 score.
