The Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves scored six second-half goals to beat the Crookston Pirates Girls’ soccer team 8-0 in a Section 8A matchup in Walker.
FIRST HALF –
The Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves Delaney Collins had a great first half as she started the game with a goal in the fourth minute for a quick 1-0 lead. Crookston’s defense settled in and played well for the next 20 minutes before Collins struck again with 11 minutes left in the half for a 2-0 lead. The Wolves led by the same score at halftime. Crookston’s top defender, Madelyn Knutson was injured and had to leave the game and missed the rest of the game.
SECOND HALF –
WHA took advantage of the Pirates being short-handed with several injuries to key players and Delaney Collins scored her third goal of the game four minutes into the second half for a 3-0 lead and a natural hat trick. The Wolves continued to pepper the Pirate goal keeper with shots, but Kambree Wangen made some great saves to keep the Pirates within three goals. The Wolves broke the game open in the final 20 minutes of the half as Zoe Cox scored with 19 minutes left to make it 4-0. Five minutes later, they added a goal from Elizabeth Cains. Only a minute later, the Wolves’ Emma Landreville added another goal for a 6-0 lead. WHA scored two more goals in the final two minutes of the game, with Zoe Cox scoring two for the second Wolves hat-trick of the game and an 8-0 victory.
“Mady Knutson was injured at the end of the first half, and Anna Heldstab moved to center D and adapted well against a talented kicker. Kinsley Wangen had a great game as center mid. She was solid, consistent with good connections with Brooklyn Waldal in the second half, but they couldn’t score a goal,” said Pirate Coach Sarah Reese. “We weren’t able to get consistent offense going tonight. Kambree Wangen did a great job, and the score didn’t reflect her play as she had many difficult saves. We weren’t able to get consistent offense going tonight.?
Crookston ends the regular season with a 1-12 record and will play in the first round of the Section 8A soccer tournament on Tuesday. WHA improves to 9-5-1 on the year.
