We have a Section 8A Boys hockey preview, compliments of our friends at Let’s Play Hockey. They put together a preview of each section and they said we could use it on the column. “Anything to get these kids some publicity,” is what they said when I reached out them. Section 8A
Section 8 is home to some of the bluebloods of Class A hockey. East Grand Forks captured the Class A state championship and will be a strong contender to repeat this season. The Green Wave will return 10 skaters from last season, along with two goaltenders. Tucker Lovejoy and Jace Panzer should each be in line for better seasons this year after putting in great efforts in 2024-25.
While the Green Wave will be hoping to retain its title, it’ll have to stave off a stiff test in the form of the Warroad Warriors. Warroad has a rich hockey history, having made four tournament appearances since 2020, but is still seeking its first championship since 2005. The Warriors will undoubtedly have aspirations and opportunities to capture that title with an extensive returning roster of exceptional players. They’ll be without last year’s top scorer, Taven James, but will return their next five leading scorers. Ryan Shaugabay is a senior this year and will look to build upon a breakout season in which he scored 58 points. The Warriors will also be strong in net with both Finn Hanson and Patrick Kennedy coming back for a potential state title run.
There’s plenty of talent elsewhere in the section apart from the Green Wave and Warriors as well. Senior forwards Garrett Fischer and Jay Reese should play massive roles in a Crookston offense that looks like it could score a lot of goals. Fischer scored 56 points last season while Reese added 48. In a similar situation, Red Lake Falls should be able to score plenty of goals, too. They’re led by Keegan Schmitz (49 points last season) and Boe Nelson (44).
Section 8 has a ton of goal-scoring ability, but there’s also a lot of defense in the section as well. Griffin Lindberg is a junior from Detroit Lakes who should be one of the strongest in the class. Lindberg started 25 games last season for the Lakers and logged a .908 save percentage. Reid Gerbracht is a strong defender for Bagley/Fosston, who should be interesting to follow this season as he plays his junior season for a Flyers team that went 15-11-0 last year and has aspirations for even more.

The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team announced the signing of seven student-athletes for their 2026 signing class. The class is the largest of Head Coach Natalie Moynihan’s time as head coach and the largest for the program since signing seven in 2022. The Golden Eagles signed Cairin Berger (G, 5-9, Esko, Minn./Duluth Marshall H.S.), Chloe Boll (G, 5-9, Crookston), Hanna Bultman (F, 6-0, Oak Creek. Wis./St. Thomas More H.S.), Maggie Hydes (F, 5-11, Louisville, Ky./Homeschool/LKY Athletics), Lexi Lamppa (G, 5-8, Eveleth/Rock Ridge H.S.), Maija Lamppa (G, 5-8, Eveleth/Rock Ridge H.S.), and Lexi Mahlen (F, 6-0, Fosston).
The Golden Eagles are currently in their third season under Coach Moynihan. Minnesota Crookston is coming off a 9-20 mark last season and have started this season 1-3 and 0-1 in the NSIC.
Cairin Berger (G, 5-9, Esko, Minn./Duluth Marshall H.S.)
Berger averaged 14 points per game at Duluth Marshall H.S. She was an All-Lake Superior Conference Second Team pick. Berger is closing in on 1,000 points at Duluth Marshall H.S. She competed for Esko H.S., before making the move to Duluth Marshall. She was a First Team All-Conference pick as a freshman.
She is the daughter of Matthew and Trish Berger. Her brother Cuinn plays for the Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team. Her brother Camden played at Fond du Lac Tribal Community College.
Chloe Boll (G, 5-9, Crookston, Minn./Crookston H.S.)
Boll has been a two-year captain for Crookston High School. She averaged 18 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game as a junior…Boll earned Academic All-State for basketball, and was an All-Northwest Conference selection.
She is the daughter of Bryan and Melissa Boll. Boll plans to major in exercise science. Her brother Ethan plays football at North Dakota. Her Dad Bryan played football at Concordia College. She has a cousin Mollie Rupp, who plays volleyball for Minnesota Duluth. Her cousin Bailey Rupp is committed to play hockey at Minnesota Duluth. Her aunt Jenny Boll played basketball at North Dakota.
Hanna Bultman (F, 6-0, Oak Creek, Wis./St. Thomas More H.S.)
Bultman was a WBCA Honorable Mention All-State pick in basketball as a junior…She earned First Team All-Metro Classic Conference, and was runner-up for Player of the Year…Bultman was Second Team All-Conference for volleyball. As a senior, she was named Honorable Mention All-Conference for volleyball. As a sophomore, Bultman was named Honorable Mention All-Metro Classic Conference for basketball and volleyball. In ninth grade, she was named Honorable Mention All-Conference for basketball and volleyball. She tallied 20.0 points per game, and shot 50.1 percent from the field as a junior. Bultman also notched 8.2 rebounds per tilt.
She is the daughter of Craig and Alicia Bultman.
Maggie Hydes (F, 5-11, Louisville, Ky./Homeschool/LKY Athletics)
Hydes attended homeschool, but has competed for the LKY Saints, a competitive sports program for homeschool athletes in Louisville. She has been a three-year team captain. Hydes helped the Saints to the East Coast National Championship for homeschools in 2025. They were also ORHC Conference Tournament Champions.She was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hydes plans to major in exercise science. She is the daughter of Missy and Sonny Hydes. She previously attended traditional school but made the move to homeschool.
Lexi Lamppa (G, 5-8, Eveleth, Minn./Rock Ridge H.S.)
Lamppa earned All-Lake Superior Conference honors in basketball and cross country. She is a two-time state qualifier in basketball and cross country. She is joining Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball alongside her twin sister Maija Lamppa. She averaged 19.8 points per game as a junior at Rock Ridge H.S. She was a teammate at Rock Ridge of current Golden Eagle Anna Westby.
She is the daughter of Josh and Stacie Lamppa. Her father Josh Lamppa played baseball at College of St. Scholastica. Her sister Ella Lamppa played tennis at Wisconsin-Stout. Her sister Emma Lamppa plays basketball at Hamline. Her aunt Jen Waldorf played basketball at St. Cloud State and Montana State University-Northern.
Maija Lamppa (G, 5-8, Eveleth, Minn./Rock Ridge H.S.)
She was an All-Lake Superior Conference pick. Lamppa helped Rock Ridge H.S. to two sixth-place finishes, and two Section Championships. She has served as a basketball captain. Lamppa joins her twin sister Lexi as signees for the Golden Eagles. She was a teammate at Rock Ridge of current Golden Eagle Anna Westby.
She is the daughter of Josh and Stacie Lamppa. Her father Josh Lamppa played baseball at College of St. Scholastica. Her sister Ella Lamppa played tennis at Wisconsin-Stout. Lexi Mahlen (F, 6-0, Fosston, Minn./Fosston H.S.)
Mahlen is a two-time All-Pine to Prairie Conference pick in volleyball. She is a three-time All-Conference selection in basketball. Mahlen earned three All-Conference picks in softball. She was a Conference MVP in softball.
She is the daughter of Nate and Rochelle Mahlen. Mahlen joins her sister Brynlea Mahlen, who is on the Golden Eagle women’s basketball team. Her mom Rochelle played volleyball and softball at Jamestown. Her dad Nate Mahlen was an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team from 2007-23, and is currently an assistant athletic director at Minnesota Crookston.

JOKES
An elderly man lay dying in his bed.
In death’s agony, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed.
Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled down the stairs.
With labored breath, he leaned against the doorframe, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death’s agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven: there, spread out upon waxed paper on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies.
Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?
Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture. His parched lips parted: the wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth, seemingly bringing him back to life.
The aged and withered hand trembled on its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife.
“Stay out of those,” she said, “they’re for the funeral.”

There were these two elderly people living in a Florida mobile home park. He was a widower and she a widow. They had known one another for a number of years. Now, one evening there was a community supper in the big activity center. These two were at the same table, across from one another. As the meal went on, he made a few admiring glances at her and finally gathered up his courage to ask her, “Will you marry me?”
After a dramatic pause and precisely six seconds of ‘careful consideration,’ she answered. “Yes. Yes, I will.”
The meal ended and with a few more pleasant exchanges and they went to their respective places.
Next morning, he was troubled. “Did she say ‘yes’ or did she say ‘no’?”
He couldn’t remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. Not even a faint memory. With trepidation, he went to the telephone and called her.
First, he explained to her that he didn’t remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he gained a little more courage, he then inquired of her, “When I asked if you would marry me, did you say ‘Yes’ or did you say ‘No’?”
He was delighted to hear her say, “Why, I said, ‘Yes, yes I will’ and I meant it with all my heart.”
Then she continued, “And I am so glad that you called, because I couldn’t remember who had asked me.”

A wife comes home late at night from being out of town and quietly opens the door to her bedroom.
From under the blanket she sees four legs instead of two. She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can. Once she’s done, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink.
As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine.
“Hi Darling”, he says, “Your parents have come to visit us, so l let them stay in our bedroom. Did you say ‘hello’?”
