BGMR scores with 5 seconds left to beat Crookston Boys Basketball

The Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators Payton Gust grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with 5.4 seconds remaining to give his team a 53-51 victory over the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team in the Swamp at the Greenbush-Middle River High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
BGMR started the game on a 9-3 run with the only Pirate points coming on a Zachariah Ali three-point play. Crookston’s Reggie Winjum made two free throws a little over three minutes into the game to get his team within a 9-5 deficit. The teams exchanged baskets for a while and the Gators led 12-9. BGMR built a 16-9 lead seven minutes into the half. Winjum answered with a three-pointer before the Gators built their lead to 25-18 with 3:50 remaining. Crookston took over the rest of the half as they ended on a 12-0 run. Winjum started the run with a basket before Carter Fee made a deep three-pointer from the wing. Winjum finished the half by scoring the final seven points with a basket, three-pointer, and two free throws to give the Pirates a 30-25 lead at halftime.

SECOND HALF –
BGMR started the second half with an Adrian Nelson basket before Crookston’s Fee buried a three-pointer for a 33-27 lead. BGMR battled back to tie the game at 34-34 with baskets from Austin Przekwas and Adrian Nelson. Crookston’s Winjum stopped the run with a three-pointer and Nolan Johnson had a layup to give the Pirates a 39-34 lead. BGMR responded with five points behind a Nelson free throw and two baskets from Payton Gust to tie the game at 39 apiece halfway through the half. Crookston’s Ali stopeped the run with a basket before the Gators’s Nelson rattled home a three-pointer for a 42-41 Gator lead with 6:06 to go in the game. Crookston went to Ali again and he made a basket to give the Pirates a 43-42 lead but the Gators answered with eight straight points. Will Foss scored four, and two points apiece from Przekwas and Payton Gust for a 50-43 lead with two minutes remaining. Crookston’s Beau Smith stopped the run with a three-pointer and after a defensive stop, the Pirates came back with a Winjum three-pointer to get within a 50-49 deficit. BGMR made one of two free throws before Winjum scored on a layup for his 26th point of the game, tying the game at 51-51 with 25 seconds left. BGMR called a timeout with 20 seconds to go and took a shot. The shot was off, but the Gators Gust grabbed the rebound and scored with 5.4 seconds remaining. Crookston called a timeout, knowing they had a challenge ahead of them as the Gators only had four fouls, giving them two fouls to give. Crookston inbounded the ball and Winjum was fouled with three seconds left. Crookston inbounded the ball, but the Pirate caught the ball in the air and landed out of bounds to turn the ball over. BGMR inbounded the ball with 1.8 seconds left and the clock ran out and the Gators held on for the 53-51 victory.

Crookston drops to 0-4 on the year and will host Fosston on Thursday, a game you can watch on KROX TV. BGMR improves to 2-4 on the year with two point wins over Warroad and Crookston.
