Crookston Girls Basketball drops defensive battle to WAO

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team couldn’t break through the tough Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies’ defense, as the Ponies grinded their way to a 52-27 win in Warren on Tuesday night.

FIRST HALF
The first half was all defense. After 6 minutes of play, the game was tied 4-4 with both Pirate buckets coming from Chloe Boll. WAO finally got a big shot from Macey Boe, making her first of two three-pointers in the half, and then a bucket from Miela Pierce gave WAO a 9-4 lead. Crookston got a bucket from Brooklyn Waldal to cut the lead back down to three, and then teams alternated buckets until the Ponies had a 12-9 lead with 3 minutes to go. From there, WAO went on their best offensive run of the game, ending the half on a 9-2 run, including two 3-pointers from Annie Peterson, thus allowing the Ponies to take a 21-11 lead into the half.

SECOND HALF
As the second half began, the Ponies were more determined to get some offense flowing against the Pirate defense. They began with a bang, as Macey Boe hit another three-pointer to get the half started, and they pulled out ahead to a 29-15 lead. From there, the Ponies went on another run; this time a 12-5 run, led by Annie Peterson with six points during the run, and the Ponies pulled ahead to a 41-20 lead. All 5 points scored during that run for the Pirates were scored by Madi Bruggeman, who had over half of the team’s points for the game. Whereas she scored 14, the rest of the Pirates’ squad scored 13, and the Ponies’ tough defense stayed firm, allowing the Ponies to win 52-27.

Crookston falls to 3-10 on the season and will travel to Thief River Falls on Thursday. WAO is the top team in the Section 8A West sub-section and improves to 10-2.
