The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s basketball team took down the Augustana Vikings by a score of 93-70 at Lyskaer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, a game in which Emma Miller scored her 2000th career point.
FIRST QUARTER –
Augustana started the game with a layup before UMC countered with 10 straight points. Emma Miller (Sr. Albertville) led the way with six points, Rayna Klejeski (Jr. Barnum) and Anna Westby (Fresh. Evelth) had a basket each for a 10-2 lead with 5:36 left in the quarter. The teams exchanged baskets for the next three minutes. With UMC leading 17-14, Miller made two free throws and Westby made a jump shot with one minute to go for a 21-14 lead. Augustana scored the only points in the final minute on a three-pointer and UMC led 21-17 going into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER –
The second quarter turned into a three-pointer shooting contest, and UMC had a great start as senior guard Natalie Mikrot (Sr. Willow River) made three straight three-pointers in the first two minutes for a 30-17 lead. Augustana responded with a 9-0 run of their own to get within a 30-26 deficit with 6:15 left in the half. The back-and-forth battle continued as UMC answered with 11 straight points. The run started with a Halle Winjum (Fresh. Crookston) layup, Klejeski added three points before Riley Jenkins (Jr. Galesberg, IL) buried a three-pointer, and Westby followed suit with a three-pointer of her own for a 41-26 lead with 2:38 left in the half. Augustana made a three-pointer before Mikrot finished the half with her fourth three-pointer of the quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 44-29 lead at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER –
The Vikings looked to change the narrative of the game, and they opened up with a trap press defense that initially threw the Golden Eagles out of whack. However, the hot shooting of UMC was there to make up for things. 3-pointers from Westby and Jenkins gave the Golden Eagles a 50-34 lead, and the story of getting back to the line kept pulling them away. Two free throws from Jenkins put the Golden Eagles up 20, and the points kept on coming. Mikrot hit her 5th 3-pointer of the game, and the combination of MIller and Mikrot lead the way, as they scored the team’s final 8 points of the quarter. Augustana tried to find answers, but could only cut the lead down to 65-47 at the end of 3.
FOURTH QUARTER –
The fourth quarter saw the Golden Eagles score the first 5 points, capped off by a 3-pointer by Miller, which put her at 2,000 career points. The Golden Eagles were relentless on offense throughout the game, but continued it in the 4th with 28 points, their most in a quarter since the calendar turned to 2026. Mikrot’s 6th 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles up 26 came from a steal from Winjum, her 4th of 6 on the day. From there, UMC cleared the bench, and ended up with 37 total bench points, giving them more than enough offense to cruise to a 93-70 win.
UMC improves to 4-13, 3-8 in the NSIC. Augustana is now 6-12, 3-9 in the NSIC.
