Stephen-Argyle locks down Crookston Boys Basketball

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team opened the game on an 11-3 run, but were outscored 58-37 for the remainder of the game as the Stephen-Argyle Storm took down the Pirates by a score of 69-40 at the Crookston High School gymnasium. Stephen-Argyle’s 6’11 senior, Jake Carlson, led all scorers with 21 points.

FIRST HALF
The first half began slowly, with the Pirates holding on to a slim 4-3 lead with just under 12 minutes to go in the first half, but then the Pirates began to get going, and they were led by Reggie Winjum, who scored a breakaway layup followed by a deep three-pointer, putting the Pirates up 9-3. The Pirates built the lead up to 11-3 on a bucket in the lane by Joshua Hesby, concluding an 11-0 run for an 11-3 lead with 9:12 left in the half. Stephen-Argyle took the game over the rest of the way as they went on a 15-0 run that was sparked by six straight points from Owen Widner, a three point play by Raydon Woinarowicz, and a basket apiece from Shay Setterholm, Woinarowicz, and Caden Pagnac for an 18-11 lead with 2:22 to go, forcing a Crookston timeout. Crookston finally broke a seven-minute scoring drought with two Winjum free throws, and Carter Fee followed with a 3-pointer to bring the Pirates within a 21-16 deficit with 58 seconds to go. . In the final minute, the Storm got a three-pointer from Shay Setterholm and a basket from Dylan Widner at the buzzer, giving the Storm a 26-16 lead going into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Stephen-Argyle started the second half by going to their 6’11 center, Jake Carlson, who scored the first four points of the half. Crookston’s Fee hit a three-pointer, and after a Storm free throw, Winjum made a basket to get within a 31-21 deficit. Stephen-Argyle broke the game open with a 10-0 run over a three-minute span with eight points from Carlson and two points from Pagnac for a 41-21 lead six minutes into the half. Crookston’s Gunnar Groven stopped the Storm run with a three-pointer. After the teams exchanged baskets, Stephen-Argyle went on a 12-0 run with Owen Widner leading the way with four points for a 55-26 lead with seven minutes remaining. Crookston countered with six straight points with a Groven three-pointer, a Winjum basket, and a Nolan Johnson free throw to get within a 55-32 deficit. Stephen-Argyle’s Anders Thompson hit a three-pointer, and Pagnac added a basket, and the Storm cruised the rest of the way for a 69-40 victory.

Crookston falls to 3-14 on the season and will take on Hawley on Thursday. Stephen-Argyle is now 14-6 on the year.
