The Care and Share/New Hope Food Shelf in Crookston is conducting an online auction fundraiser to help with increasing costs that is affecting both the center and area residents.
The auction started on April 7 and will run until May 6. Care and Share Executive Director Carolina Diaz said the fundraiser is a part of a new way to get revenue. “Through our strategic planning, we are implementing new ways to create revenue for the shelter,” said Diaz. “And so moving forward every other month, we’re hoping to have some sort of small fundraiser in order to help impact the General Operations Fund.”
Diaz said they have seen a continued increase in community need. “Right now, we’re seeing an influx of people needing food. I mean, food inequality is huge. I think the last round of 2025, we had over 104,000 pounds of food leave the food pantry,” said Diaz. “Also transitioning into ADA accessibility. We are now in the future, going to be able to help the unhoused who are disabled. And so that’s another big, huge step that we’re working towards as well.”
Diaz said they are always looking to adapt to the times and make sure they can help those in need. “You know, we’re adapting. There’s never one day that is the same here. But there are challenges,” said Diaz. “We just have a great partnership with those in our community, being able to have Riverview Recovery on site for substance abuse and alcohol. And now we also have a nurse on site. We have a soup kitchen that is very helpful to the community in need, and it’s open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. And I also believe that having a programming shelter, rather than not having one, allows for access to many resources and the ability to find stable housing.”
Tri-Valley, which provides long-term housing funding, is another partner the Care and Share works with to support the community. “Even though we’re seeing the amount of funding going down, we still have that relationship that helps us, as well as United Way. United Way gave us a huge amount this year for the food pantry, and just because of the numbers alone. And we are just so thankful and grateful for those partnerships.”
Diaz said they appreciate the community’s support, and if anyone would like to donate to the auction, they will be happy to list it. “We are so grateful for the support from the community and how much, when we come together, we see the difference it makes in the people that need it the most. So we appreciate that,” said Diaz.
