This fall, Crookston High School will have the first musical listening team in Region 8A. The Music Listening Team is hosted by the Minnesota Music Listening Contest.
Throughout the fall, teams study and listen to a wide range of music from a comprehensive list in hopes of making their way to state, but there is also a mystery list of pieces not included in the study guide. Each team consists of three people who will have to decide which students favor certain styles or eras, and those who wish to study to gain more expertise for the team. Regional competitions are held in January and February and include five rounds of written responses based on audio clips and study guide materials. The top teams from each region will qualify for the state competition.
The music listening team is open to all music students in grades 9 through 12. Students will earn lettering points for their participation, and the possibility of additional lettering points if they become eligible for state participation.
Students can sign up through Crookston High School’s Bound registration program. The high school music teachers will also have a form that students can fill out to provide input on which times of day work best for them to join this activity, along with more information for anyone who might be interested but has questions about what it entails.
