On Tuesday, September 2, 2026, officers with the Grand Forks Police Department responded to a report of a stolen motor vehicle from the Broken Drum, located at 1503 North Washington Street. The vehicle was described as a white 2008 Chevrolet Suburban.
Officers located the stolen Suburban northeast of the Broken Drum and attempted to contain the vehicle. The driver evaded officers, and a pursuit was initiated.
The suspect led officers through northern Grand Forks and continued into the southern portion of the city. During the pursuit, the suspect drove at excessive speeds, disregarded traffic control devices, and operated the stolen vehicle in an extremely reckless manner.
As the suspect’s driving behavior escalated, it created a significant and immediate danger to other motorists, pedestrians, responding officers, and the general public. Due to the increasing risk created by the suspect’s actions, the Grand Forks Police Department terminated the pursuit in the interest of public safety.
The stolen Suburban was later located traveling south in the 3200 block of South Washington Street before continuing south into Grand Forks County. Members of the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, resulting in a second pursuit.
The pursuit continued south on Highway 81. The suspect eventually entered a farmyard, turned around, and began traveling north on Highway 81 toward Grand Forks. The suspect continued to flee from law enforcement, creating an ongoing danger to the public
and responding officers.
Deputies with the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office ultimately conducted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver in the 1100 block of Highway 81. Following the maneuver, the Suburban entered the west ditch, rolled multiple times, and caught fire.
Members of the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office and Grand Forks Police Department were able to get the suspect out of the vehicle, and he was taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Levi Rose. Levi Rose sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash and was evaluated and treated at the scene by paramedics. Levi Rose declined additional medical treatment and was subsequently transported to the Grand Forks County Correctional Center.
