Crookston Pirates Girls Soccer drops road matchup to Fergus Falls

The Crookston Pirate Girls’ Soccer Team hung around well in the first half but tailed off in the second as the Fergus Falls Otters took control and won by a score of 5-0 in Fergus Falls on Thursday.

FIRST HALF –
The game could not have started much worse for the Pirates, as a shot in the second minute from Averie Tonneson found the back of the net, and the Otters took a 1-0 lead. The sun was in play on that shot. The next fifteen minutes were the best fifteen for Crookston, as they put pressure on the Otter defense and got multiple shots on goal. Unfortunately, none found the net. The Otters then took off in transition, and off a corner kick, a perfectly placed shot from Delia Vigesaa made it 2-0. Ten minutes later, after an initial stop of a breakaway by Aubrey Bartrum, Tonneson stayed with the play and scored her second goal of the night, increasing the lead to 3-0, which would stick heading into the second half.

SECOND HALF –
Just like the first half, Fergus Falls was able to score in the first few minutes, this time on a great play from Aubree Wilson, putting the Otters up 4-0. For the rest of the half, the game turned into a defensive stalemate. The Pirates were unable to get a shot on goal in the half, but their defense greatly improved, as they slowed down the Otter attack. Fergus Falls got the last word, however, as Freshman Hannah Johnson scored in the final two minutes to cap off a 5-0 victory.
Even after the loss, Pirate coach Sarah Reese was proud to highlight players who performed well. “Aubrey and Madi made good, quick decisions defensively, and Kambree had good ball tracking skills tonight in tough situations.” said Reese, “This group is always wanting to learn and they never gave up.”

Crookston falls to 0-6 on the season, while Fergus Falls is now 1-4.
