Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer falls in road contest to Melrose

The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team got back on the scoreboard but couldn’t keep pace with the Melrose Area Dutchmen, losing 7-1 in Melrose on Tuesday afternoon.

FIRST HALF –
The first half started out competitive in the first few minutes, and that ended up staying true throughout the first half, as the Dutchmen didn’t have the power to pull away from the Pirates. They did have a few shots early, though, and two of them found the net in the first 15 minutes, putting Melrose up 2-0. Though the Pirates’ defense was able to slow down the offense of the Dutchmen, Melrose was able to find the back of the net one more time, and the Dutchmen were able to take a 3-0 lead into the second half.

SECOND HALF –
As the second half got started, Melrose began to step up the aggressiveness, pushing the ball faster and applying more pressure on the Pirate defense. This allowed them to get two goals early in the half, extending the lead to 5-0. Extra pressure can create opportunities, however, and Grant Funk capitalized on one, delivering a goal to put the Pirates on the board. The Dutchmen got the last laugh, however, and scored two more before the final whistle, ending the game with a decisive 7-1 win.

Crookston drops to 1-5 on the season, and Melrose improves to 3-5-2.
