The Crookston City Council had a special meeting on Monday to approve the 2027 preliminary levy and set a public budget meeting date.
The 2027 preliminary levy will be set at $5,378,022, or an 11 percent increase from 2026. Interim City Administrator Darin Selzler reminded the council that this amount will be the maximum levy that can be taken for 2027, but the goal is to lower it through some cuts focusing on capital improvement projects.
Selzler provided updated residential and commercial property tax impact numbers following a request by councilmember Morgan Hibma at the September 21 Ways and Means Committee discussion. “We went through at the 11% preliminary, and I will just preface this is actually 11.1%,” said Selzler. “We did reduce that because if you remember, that was originally what it was. But on a $100,000 residential homestead, it would increase $11.78 a year. On a $250,000, would increase $42.60, on a $100,000 commercial property, it would increase $28.27, and on a $500,000 commercial property, it would increase $173.62. Those are going to be a tenth of a point high, but it’s going to be super close.”
Following the discussion, the council voted unanimously to approve the preliminary levy, the 2027 general budget fund, and set the public budget meeting for Monday, December 7, at 6:00 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.
The next scheduled city council meeting will take place on Monday, October 5, at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.
