The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Soccer team won their second straight match with a 5-2 victory over Mesabi East in a match played at the Crookston High School Soccer Field.
Crookston started the scoring, just over a minute into the game, with a Ben Brantner goal off a pass from Jacob Brunelle for a quick 1-0 lead. “We got off to a wonderful start,” said Pirate Coach Lon Boike. “That was a great start and we took advantage of them just getting off the bus.”
Noah Kiel scored the second goal of the game 10 minutes later to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. “That was a nice goal,” said Coach Boike. “Going up 2-0 early was a great start.” Brendan Tangquist added the third Pirate goal 41 seconds after the second goal and Crookston had a 3-0 lead 12 minutes into the game. “That was exciting for everyone and he had a nice left foot kick for the goal,” said Coach Boike. Mesabi East answered with two goals in the next three minutes and Crookston’s lead was cut to 3-2 and that was the score at halftime. “We might have let down a little bit after taking a 3-0 lead,” said Coach Boike. “We didn’t have the same intensity, but we still had the lead going into halftime.”
In the second half, Crookston added two more goals when Noah Kiel scored almost nine minutes into the second half and he added another goal in the final 11 minutes to complete the hattrick and the Pirates won 5-2, for the second win in a row. “Noah had a great game,” said Coach Boike. “I am especially happy for the seniors. We played a great match today and it was a great weekend. I feel we are playing better defensively right now and playing some of our better soccer.”
Crookston improves to 2-11 on the season and will travel to East Grand Forks on Tuesday.
