After a serious illness and a prolonged hospital stay, 85-year-old Roger Wagner faced an uncertain road to recovery. “I was dying last November. I had a fatal blood count and didn’t even know if the next day would come. I luckily pulled through, but after an unsuccessful return home, I knew I had to do something…so I gave Benedictine Living Community-Crookston’s Rehab a try. It was the best decision I could have made. I am home and back in the business of life!” Roger exclaimed with a smile.
Roger’s illness left him incredibly weak and deconditioned, making everyday activities such as walking, dressing, and getting out of bed and chairs more difficult than ever before. Roger was ready for the next chapter of his recovery, and his goal was clear: regain strength and confidence and return to the comfort of home. “My philosophy is to be a blessing every day, and thanks to the hard work of so many at Benedictine, they helped me reach my goals and got me back on my feet.”
Jennifer Tull, Physical Therapist and Department Lead, noted, “Roger worked so hard with every aspect of therapy. Day after day, he gave it his all to strengthen and build stamina. We are so proud of him. His courage and determination made the difference.”
Roger was quick to point out how much he appreciated the team. “Those Nurse Aides, true heroes! They were so kind to me. Gio Sadudaquil, (CNA) and Mike Huffman, (TMA), when I left, I didn’t just get one hug, but two from each! They made every day so extra special with their helpful, cheerful ways, and of course, my therapy team was tops. Maddie Tate (OTA), Amber Finseth (PTA), Hannah Street (OTR), Jen Tull (PT), and Tracy Cameron (OTR). They kept me on my toes. Everyone was just so nice to me. We joked about how it felt like Mr. Roger’s neighborhood down my wing. It was just fantastic. There were many tears from them and me when I went home, let me tell you.”
A Team Working Toward One Goal
From the beginning, Roger was supported by an interdisciplinary team dedicated to helping him reach his goals. Physical therapy focused on improving his strength, balance, endurance, and mobility. Occupational therapy helped him safely relearn everyday activities, including dressing and bathing. Nursing staff monitored his health, supported Roger’s recovery, and encouraged progress. All departments had a hand in providing the services Roger needed to get better and go home. “Each person there does something important. People like Nicole Sperling, my housekeeper, and Miguel Samame, who made my bed, were just fantastic, so exceptional,” Roger said with determination.
At first, even small accomplishments required significant effort. Roger sometimes felt frustrated by how much strength he had lost during his illness. However, with encouragement, each milestone was celebrated, no matter how small. Day by day, his hard work began to pay off. What once seemed overwhelming gradually became manageable. Roger’s wife and family support helped keep him motivated throughout his stay.
“Little by little, step by step, if it hadn’t been for the Villa, my loved ones, and all the encouragement, it would have been the end for me. I made so many friends! It was hard to say goodbye,” noted Wagner.
Nurse Jill Brown went on to share, “Roger was an ambassador. His optimistic, upbeat attitude and helpful presence just brightened each day for our entire Benedictine family. It was fun to listen in and hear Roger and his cousin, Al Weiland, reminisce about their days in Korea (where Al was awarded the Bronze Star). And while pouring coffee in the dining room, I would take in every word of Roger’s wise advice on how to keep my baby trees going this terribly dry summer. Roger never quits working and helping others. What a gentleman!”
Roger added with a smile, “Even while I was busy rehabbing, I was able to keep my business rolling and see to the many Fernleaf Peonies orders coming in throughout the state. Every day I grew stronger, more hopeful, and happier. It was so very special. I am thankful!”
More Than Rehabilitation—A Return to What Matters Most
At Benedictine Living, they are proud to provide individualized, compassionate rehabilitation that helps residents recover after hospitalization and work toward their highest possible level of independence. Every person’s journey is different, but every milestone matters.
For Roger, success meant returning home. For our team, it meant knowing they had helped him take meaningful steps toward his goals. Sometimes, the greatest achievement is helping someone get back to the place they call home.
