Athlete of the Week – Carter Coauette

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Crookston Pirate junior wrestler Carter Coauette. Carter has been having a great season wrestling at 160 pounds and most recently won his weight division at the Minnewaska Area Invite. “Carter is a go-getter and works really hard,” said Pirates coach Wes Hanson. “He has great technique, and I think the biggest thing with him is that he is always trying to score a lot of points. He doesn’t get complacent, and he is focused on winning every position which helps him and of course, helps us as a team as well.”

Coauette is an experienced wrestler as he has been involved in the sport for as long as he can remember. “My dad was the one who first showed me it and at first it wasn’t very fun to lose,” said Coauette. “But over time it is fun to work on your craft and compete and I’ve enjoyed it ever since.”

The junior already has two appearances in the State Tournament, with the first being as an eighth-grader, and the other just last year as a sophomore. This year, he has high hopes again not only for himself but for the team as well. “I would love to personally go back to state and try to get a medal this time,” said Coauette. “For the team, I also think we can do more than just make a run in the section, I think we can make a run at the State Tournament.”

His coach also added. “He has everything to possibly accomplish some really special stuff. It’s just going to come down to how hard he is willing to work,” said coach Hanson. “He’s put a lot of work in already and that is showing with his performance and matches, and I think us as coaches believe we can help him accomplish the goals he has at the end of the year and it’s going to be really fun to see how he does.”

Outside of wrestling, Coauette also plays football, baseball, and is a part of the Pirates track & field team.
