The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team lost their final regular season match 6-1 to the Bemidji Lumberjacks in a match played indoors at the Choice Fitness Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
The first match complete was first singles where Bemidji’s Savannah Haugen beat Catherine Tiedemann 6-1, 6-0. “I played pretty good,” said Tiedemann. “She is really good.”
Crookston’s Emma Borowicz evened up the team score at 1-1 when she won her third singles match 6-0, 6-0. “She was hitting the ball pretty well today,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “She competes really hard and if we get everybody on the same page (as far as competing) we will be good to go next week.”
The first doubles team lost their match 6-4, 6-1 and Bemidji won a competitive second singles match 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 for a 3-1 lead in the match. Bemidji won the next three matches, including a close one at second doubles with Hannah Lindemoen and Eden Haller falling 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). “We came back in that one and played better in the second set after not playing very well in the first set,” said Coach Geffre. “It was nice to see the girls battle back in that match.”
The Pirates were happy with their effort and it was nice to wrap up the regular season against a competitive team and indoors. “We had some competitive matches and if we wanted to beat them we were going to have to win some singles matches,” said Coach Geffre. “It was good to get indoors and get the girls some confidence playing indoors.”
Crookston ends the regular season with a 5-16 record and the Section 8A seeding meeting will be on Friday at Mahnomen.
After the varsity matches were over the girls had a chance to get some practice time in and some of the girls played against the coaches. “We had the courts reserved so we were able to get out and get some extra practice which was nice,” said Coach Geffre.
