The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team has had a problem holding on to leads all season and after winning the first two sets, they lost the final three sets to lose to the Bemidji State Beavers 3-2 (15-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-11) in a Northern Sun Conference match played at Lysaker Gym in Crookston.
SET ONE –
Bemidji State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a kill and a UMC attack error before the Golden Eagles responded with a 4-0 run started by three BSU attack errors and a UMC service ace. The Beavers battled back to score the next two points only to have UMC go on a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. Five of the six UMC points came off attack errors by Bemidji State. The teams played even the rest of the set and with UMC leading 23-15, Charlie Krieg had a kill and Bemidji State had another attack error and the Golden Eagles won the first set 25-15.
SET TWO
The second set was a fantastic back-and-forth battle with ties at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. 10, 11, and 12 before UMC scored the next four points led. By two kills from Lauren Wallace for a 16-12 lead. The teams would play even for a while and UMC led 18-16 when Bemidji State had back-to-back attack errors, a kill from Bailey Schaefer, a service ace, a Bemidji State attack error, and a another UMC service ace for a 24-16 lead. After a Bemidji State kill, UMC answered with a Bailey Schaefer kill to win the set 25-17 for a 2-0 lead.
SET THREE
Once again the teams battled back-and-forth at the beginning with ties at 1, 2, and 4 before UMC went on a 5-0 run with two kills from Charlie Krieg, an ace, a Bailey Schaefer kill and a bad BSU set for a 9-4 lead. Bemidji State bounced back and went on a 13-8 run to tie the set at 17. The teams were tied at 18, 20, and 21 before Bemidji State ended the set on a 4-0 run to win the set 25-21 forcing a fourth set.
SET FOUR –
Bemidji State took an early 5-1 lead with a couple of kills, a service ace and two UMC errors. The teams played even for a while before Bemidji State slowly pulled away for a 25-17 win to force a fifth and final set.
SET FIVE –
Bemidji State took a 3-1 lead to start the set and was one-fifth of the way to the win. Bemidji State kept the lead around three or four points, but every time UMC made a little run Bemidji State had an answer and had a 12-8 lead. UMC scored on a Bailey Schaefer kill, but Bemidji State answered with a kill of their own for a 13-9 lead. The teams exchanged points again and Bemidji State led 14-10. UMC’s Lauren Wallace had a big kill forcing Bemidji State to call a time out. After the timeout, Bemidji State won the match with a big kill for a 15-11 victory to win the final three sets to win the match.
UMC drops to 1-18 overall and 0-14 in the NSIC. Bemidji State improves to 2-20 on the year and 2-12 in the NSIC.
