BGMR GIRL’S B-BALL WINS 8A WEST SUB-SECTION TITLE THANKS TO 20-3 SECOND HALF RUN

The Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators Girl’s Basketball team used a 20-3 second half run to break the game open and defeat the Goodridge-Grygla Chargers 53-30 in the Section 8A West Sub-Section Championship on Tuesday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

FIRST HALF –
BGMR showed early why they were the top seed in the West Sub-Section going in front 5-0 on a layup from Hannah Bergsnev and a three from Jade Reese just a little over a minute into the game. The Gators would extend the lead to 8-2 a couple of minutes later and that would force a Goodridge-Grygla timeout with 14:56 remaining in the half. The Gators defense was suffocating, and the Chargers couldn’t find an answer offensively. BGMR would extend the lead to 12-3 thanks to some offensive rebounds, and the Chargers would use another timeout to halt the momentum with 9:25 to play in the half. After three more Gators points, Goodridge-Grygla’s Caitlyn Jacobson would score her first points of the game on a layup giving BGMR a 15-5 edge. Kenzie Dahl would attack and score for the Gators, but the Chargers would counter with a 5-0 run on a three from Caitlyn Jacobson, and a layup from Morgan Underdahl to cut the BGMR lead to 17-10 with 5:11 to play until halftime. One concern for the Gators was that Goodridge-Grygla was able to get into the bonus, and for the last five minutes of the half, they got to the free throw line a bunch to tighten the BGMR lead down to 19-16 with 2:11 left. Kinsley Hanson would answer the run with a three for the Gators, but Caitlyn Jacobson would hit one of her own to pull the Chargers back within three points. In the final possession of the half, Kenzie Dahl would knock down a three for BGMR, giving them a 25-19 lead heading into the break.

SECOND HALF –
BGMR would start the second half like they did the first half, coming out with a 10-3 run over the first four minutes of the half to take a 35-22 lead and break the game open. The lead would continue to grow for the Gators after scores from Kenzie Dahl and Kinsley Hanson, and Goodridge-Grygla would be forced to use a timeout trailing 39-22 with 11:57 left to play. Caitlyn Jacobson had picked up her fourth foul earlier in the half, but the Chargers decided it was time to put their leading scorer back in the game. It wouldn’t make a difference and the Gators would score the next six points to cap off a 20-3 run to start the second half blowing the game open to a 45-22 lead with 10:00 remaining in the game. The Chargers started to score, but it was too late, and the closest the lead would get the rest of the game was 19 points, as the Gators would go on to win 53-30.

BGMR is now 25-3 as well as the Section 8A West Sub-Section Champions. They will take on the Fosston Greyhounds on Friday night for the Section 8A Title. Goodridge-Grygla ends their season with a final record of 19-7.
