Caiden Swenby scored 41 points and the Fertile-Beltrami Falcons Boy’s Basketball team ran past the Crookston Pirates 95-69 on Monday night.
FIRST HALF –
Giese would sink an early three for Crookston but it would be the only lead the Pirates would have all night. Fertile-Beltrami would respond with a 9-0 run by Caiden Swenby and Derek Sorenson to take a 9-3 lead, and slowly build the lead throughout the entire half. A big reason why was the play of Caiden Swenby, and the Pirates simply couldn’t slow him down. Fertile-Beltrami was getting great looks at the rim off of steals and would build the lead to 27-15 with 9:28 left in the first half. Another big reason why the Falcons were able to control the opening half was the great play from freshman Preston Hanson. He would come off the bench and score 11 first half points without missing a shot. Crookston would get a little momentum on a layup from Hunter Nicholas late in the half and they would take a timeout to try and take some momentum back. That would make the score 49-32 Fertile-Beltrami with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Fertile-Beltrami would end the opening half on a 10-4 run and take a 59-36 lead into the halftime break. Caiden Swenby led the way for Fertile-Beltrami with 24 points. Leading the way for Crookston was Tanner Giese with 14.
SECOND HALF –
The Falcons carried their momentum over into the second half with a 9-3 start to extend the lead to 68-39 forcing a Pirates timeout with 15:34 remaining in the game. Crookston would respond off of the timeout and go on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit down to 70-47. Every time Crookston tried to make it interesting, Fertile-Beltrami would have an answer, and Caiden Swenby along with Preston Hanson would continue to deliver time and time again. The closest the lead would get in the second half was 19 points, and the game was never in question as Fertile-Beltrami would cruise their way to a 95-69 win. Caiden Swenby finished with 41 points on the night. Tanner Giese led the way for Crookston scoring 23 points in the loss.
Crookston falls to 7-17 while Fertile-Beltrami improves to 19-6 with the win.
