Reggie Winjum scores 1,000th career point as Crookston Boys Basketball beats Fosston

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team played a solid game, and Reggie Winjum scored the 1,000th point of his career on a three-pointer in the first half to lead his team with a total of 37 points in the game as they pulled away for a 71-57 victory over the Fosston Greyhounds at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston’s Reggie Winjum only needed eight points to reach 1,000 career points, and he had a great start with back-to-back steals for layups to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead to start the game. Fosston answered with a Jake Howard three-pointer, and the back-and-forth first-half battle was underway. The teams were tied at seven before Fosston’s Gavin Curfman scored, but Crookston’s Carter Fee answered with a three-pointer for a 10-9 lead. Fosston’s Darien Holzer scored five straight points for a 14-10 lead. Crookston’s Winjum made a three-pointer from the corner for his 10th point of the game to score the 1,002nd point of his career as the crowd cheered, and the game was stopped to acknowledge the milestone. When play resumed, Winjum got his third steal of the game and went in for a layup, and the Pirates led 15-14 with 9:15 left in the half. Fosston built a 25-19 lead when Crookston’s Fee made a three-pointer, and Winjum added a basket to bring the Pirates within a 25-24 deficit. Fosston made one free throw before Fee made another three-pointer. Fosston’s Howard answered with a three-pointer of his own, and Curfman made two free throws for a 31-27 lead with 3:14 to go in the half. Crookston dominated the final three minutes as Beau Smith made a basket and Winjum followed with six straight points, and the Pirates took a 35-31 lead going into halftime after ending it on an 8-0 run.

Winjum led all scorers with 20 points at halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Fosston was without its first-half leading scorer, Darien Holzer, who tweaked his knee late in the first half, and he didn’t play in the second half.
Crookston’s Winjum kept things rolling to start the second half with a three-pointer for a 38-31 lead. Fosston battled back and trailed 41-37 when Winjum started a 12-0 run with a basket. Nolan Johnson added a free throw, and Fee made a three-pointer to force Fosston to call a timeout. After the timeout, Gunnar Groven had a nice three-point play, and Winjum added a three-pointer for a 53-37 lead. Fosston battled back to get within a 56-46 deficit with 7:42 left in the game when Crookston’s Winjum and Smith made baskets for a 60-46 lead. Fosston cut the deficit back to 10 points (60-50) before Fee made another three-pointer (his sixth of the game) for a 63-50 lead. Fosston made a basket before Crookston went on an 8-0 run with a strong basket from Nolan Cassavant and six Winjum points for a 71-52 lead with 1:12 remaining. Crookston held on for a 71-57 victory.

Crookston improves to 2-14 on the year and will host Menagha on Saturday in a double-header with the girls in Crookston. Fosston drops to 2-13 on the year.
