The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Golf team saw their team score rise 25 strokes from their last meet in Fergus Falls on the weekend finishing in a tie for eighth place at the Bemidji Invitational played at the Town and Country Golf Course in Bemidji. “The sun was out when we started,” said Crookston head coach Steve Kofoed, “then the sun went down and it turned windy and it was probably near freezing with wind chill, so it was a cool day. The course itself really came through the winter in good shape and should be in great shape as the season goes along and at playoff time.” The host Lumberjacks won the Invitational by five strokes over Barnesville and Detroit Lakes who tied for second out of 15 teams competing. The Pirates low player was Trey Christopherson who had a 15 over par 87. “The greens were the quickest we’ve seen so far this early season,” said Kofoed, “and we didn’t do a very good job of our mental game today. The guys were having some trouble on the first five or six holes and then they’d carry that with them and a half hour later they were still talking about they couldn’t control their slice, some bad breaks going into the woods. We did have some bad breaks, but we’ll have to get those emotions under control as we continue on through the season.” The Pirates haven’t been able to have many practices because their home course, Minakwa Golf Course hasn’t opened as of yet. “We are hoping that Minakwa will open up this week in some fashion so we can start getting in some practices, as I think we are about the only team around that hasn’t had their home course open, which makes it hard to practice. I think some of the guys ran over to Fertile to play and King’s Walk in Grand Forks but when we have no meets, it’ll be great for the players after school to head right to the course and get some practice shots in.”
Crookston is off until Friday when they are at the Thief River Falls Invitational and in Roseau on Saturday for the Rams Invite.
