CROOKSTON GIRL’S BASKETBALL BEAT DGF FOR SIXTH WIN IN A ROW

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball team made nine three-pointers and played their usual stellar defense and won their sixth game in a row, beating the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels 70-35 in a Section 8AA matchup played in Crookston.  “I think this was by far the most complete game we have played all year,” said Pirate Coach Darin Zimmerman. “We played well in all facets of the game.”

FIRST HALF –
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton took a 3-2 lead on a Peyton Backes three-pointer one minute into the game before Crookston responded with a 12-0 run.   The Pirate run was sparked by Emma Borowicz’s three straight three-pointers and was followed by an Emma Boll offensive rebound and basket, and the run was capped with a steal for a layup from Emma Borowicz for a 15-3 lead with 11:35 left in the half.  “We were really locked in on the defensive end,” said Coach Zimmerman. “Emma (Borowicz) is a step quicker than she was a month ago (after coming back from ACL surgery) and she is getting more comfortable out there and is anticipating so well.  Everything is a little quicker and you can tell that on her shot.”  Crookston led 18-8 halfway through the half when they went on a 9-2 run with Halle Winjum scoring four straight points and after a Rebel basket, Jenna Coauette and Abby Borowicz added baskets for a 27-10 lead.  Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton scored four points before Crookston finished the half on an 11-5 run to take a 38-17 lead into halftime.  “Tonight our half-court offense was solid,” said Coach Zimmerman who was impressed with his team’s 11 first-half steals. “Active hands, active feet. We played good team defense and everybody was doing their job tonight.”

SECOND HALF
Crookston started the second half on a 12-2 run behind six Halle Winjum points and the Pirates led 50-19 five minutes into the half.  “You never want to let up and play good fundamental basketball at all times,” said Coach Zimmerman. “The girls were executing well.” Crookston continued to build on the lead with Emma Boll scoring in the paint and Halle Winjum added a three-pointer for a 63-23 lead with seven minutes left in the game.  Both teams went to the bench the rest of the game and the Rebels started to score inside, including two baskets from Ashley Taves.  Crookston cruised the rest of the way for a 70-35 victory. “The girls played an all-around great game tonight,” said Coach Zimmerman. “Every game we want to get better and we have done that.  We want to keep getting better every game.”

Crookston improves to 6-1 on the year and will travel to Pelican Rapids on Saturday and you can hear the game on KROX Radio.  Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton drops to 2-4 on the year.
