The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team ran into a tough defensive team and also gave up nine three-pointers and two 9-0 runs in a 63-42 loss to the Ada-Borup-West Cougars at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF –
Crookston’s Joey Nesseth scored the game’s first basket for a 2-0 lead to start the game. ABW answered with seven points, five from Morgan Engel and a basket from Brielle Engelstad for a 7-2 lead three minutes into the game. Crookston answered with a Chloe Boll basket before the Cougars with a Morgan Smart three-pointer and a Morgan Engel basket for a 12-4 lead. Crookston’s Madi Bruggeman and Chloe Boll made baskets to get within a 12-8 deficit before ABW went on a 9-0 run over a three-minute span. The run started with an Avery Johnson basket, followed by a Brianne Myers basket. Smart kept the run going with a three-pointer before the run was capped with a pair of Morgan Engel free throws for a 21-8 lead halfway through the half. Crookston battled back with six straight points with a nice cut and basket by Brookly Waldal. Bruggeman followed with an offensive rebound and putback, and Chloe Boll made a basket to get the Pirates within a 21-14 deficit. ABW outscored Crookston 6-4 in the final five minutes of the half to take a 27-18 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
The second half was the same as ABW scored the first basket, Crookston’s Chloe Boll responded with a basket. The Cougars responded with five points with a basket by Leighton Odden, and Avery Johnson made a three-pointer for her first points of the game for a 34-20 lead. Crookston battled back to get within a 37-27 deficit after a Bruggeman three-pointer and a Waldal basket. ABW changed some things on the defensive end after a time-out, namely a little more energy, which sparked the offense. The Cougars went on another 9-0 run with four points from Morgan Engel, a three-pointer from Smart, and a basket from Brielle Engelstad for a 46-27 lead with 10 minutes left. Crookston trailed 53-33 when Chloe Boll made a free throw, and Bruggeman added a basket to get within a 53-36 deficit before the Cougars responded with eight more points for a 61-36 lead. Both teams went to the bench for the rest of the game and ABW won 63-42.
Crookston drops to 4-5 on the year and will be off until January 3, 2025 when they play Sacred Heart. ABW improves to 5-1 on the year and will be off until January 3, 2025.
