Crookston Girls Basketball scores first 14 points to beat Stephen-Argyle

The Crookston Pirate Girls’ Basketball team scored the first 14 points of the game and held on the rest of the way to beat the Stephen-Argyle Storm 67-58 in Argyle.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start the game. Chloe Boll made back-to-back three-pointers to open up the scoring. Grace Boll made two free throws, Madi Bruggeman had a three-point play, Chloe Boll added a free throw, and Nesseth capped the run with a basket for a 14-0 lead over three minutes into the game. Stephen-Argyle’s first points came when Jocelyn Groven made a basket four minutes into the game, and Ayla Woinarowicz followed with a basket to get within a 14-4 deficit with 12:47 left. Crookston slowly built on the lead and took a 29-12 lead after three straight points by Brooklyn Waldal with five minutes to go. Stephen-Argyle answered with a Nora Osowski free throw and a Jocelyn Groven three-pointer. After the Pirates’ Halle Nicholas made a three-pointer, the Storm answered with three points of their own. Crookston’s Chloe Boll made two free throws, and Bruggeman added a basket for a 36-19 lead with one minute remaining. The Storm’s Jocelyn Groven scored the last three points of the half, and Crookston took a 36-22 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Crookston took a 49-36 lead after a Nicholas basket. Stephen-Argyle started to mount a comeback with a Woinarowicz three-point play, and four points from Osowski to get within a 49-43 deficit. Crookston answered with a 10-0 run. The run started with a Joey Nesseth three-point play and was followed by baskets from Brooklyn Waldal and Bruggeman and capped with a three-pointer by Chloe Boll for a 59-43 lead. A few minutes later, Crookston led 64-54 with 65 seconds remaining. Stephen-Argyle gave it one last run as Woinarowicz made two free throws, and after a Storm steal, she made two more free throws to get within a 64-58 deficit with 44 seconds to go. Crookston turned the ball over again, but the Storm missed a shot and Crookston made three free throws in the final 30 seconds to win the game 67-58.

Crookston snaps a six-game losing streak and improves to 6-17 on the year and will take on Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Stephen-Argyle drops to 8-12 on the year and will play Fosston on Tuesday.
