The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team made 13 three-pointers and cruised to a 64-29 victory over the Warroad Warriors in a Section 8AA matchup in Warroad. The win was also Pirate Head Coach Kory Baril’s first varsity coaching victory of his career and it took place in his hometown.
FIRST HALF –
Crookston couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game as they jumped out to an 11-0 lead. The first points of the game was a sign of things to come as Chloe Boll made a three-pointer. Joey Nesseth followed with a basket, Madi Bruggeman added a free throw, Grace Boll made a three-pointer and Chloe Ball added two more points for an 11-0 lead. Warroad finally got on the board with an Attlee Larson three-pointer five minutes into the game. Grace Boll made another three-pointer before Warroad scored a pair of baskets to get within a 14-7 deficit. Crookston’s Brooklyn Waldal scored in the paint, Grace Boll made two free throws, Nesseth added a basket, and Bruggeman and Grace Ball added three-pointers to cap a 12-0 run for a 26-7 lead with 7:48 left in the half. Warroad stopped the run with a Larson basket before Crookston answered with three-pointers from the Boll sisters. Warroad’s Mara Heinen scored in the paint before Crookston’s Halle Nicholas and Grace Boll made three-pointers for the eighth and ninth of the half and Chloe Boll added a basket for a 40-11 lead. Warroad added a basket and Crookston took a 40-13 lead going into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Warroad had a much better start to the second half by outscoring Crookston 8-6 in the first four minutes. Crookston’s Grace Boll dialed long distance again, and after a Warroad free throw, Crookston’s Nesseth made a basket, and Chloe Boll buried a three-pointer for a 54-22 lead with 11:05 remaining. Warroad scored three points before Chloe Boll made a basket, and Grace Boll made her seventh three-pointer of the game to give the Pirates a 59-25 lead with seven minutes left. Warroad made a basket before Crookston’s Teagan Fanfulik made a three-pointer and Aubrey Johnson made a basket for a 64-27 lead with one minute to go. Warroad added a basket and Crookston won the game 64-29.
Crookston improves to 1-2 on the year and will travel to Fertile on Monday. Warroad drops to 0-3 on the year.
