CROOKSTON GIRL’S BASKETBALL USES LATE RUN TO BEAT ROSEAU

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team used a 6-0 run at the end of the game to beat the Roseau Rams 63-55 in a Section 8AA game played at Crookston High School.

FIRST HALF –
Roseau started the scoring with an Anya Severson basket for a 2-0 lead on the first possession.  Crookston responded with an 8-0 run with a Halle Winjum three-pointer, a Winjum block that led to a steal and a layup.  Libby Salentine capped the run with a three-pointer from the left wing for an 8-2 lead three minutes into the game.  Crookston continued to build on the lead and took an 18-8 lead after a basket by Winjum.  Things changed quickly, and Roseau answered with a 10-1 run over the next four minutes.  Severson had four points, Kayla Bachleitner and Janna Preteau, and a free throw each from Brooklyn Hulst and Sophia Olson to get within a 19-18 deficit with six minutes remaining.
The teams battled back and forth the rest of the half, and Crookston took a 29-28 lead into the half.

SECOND HALF –
Roseau came out strong in the second half and started on a 6-0 run with four points by Severson and a basket from Preteau for a 34-29 lead.  Once again, Crookston had an answer with a 13-0 run, with Borowicz and Winjum scoring five points apiece, and Smith made a three-pointer for a 42-34 lead with 11 minutes left in the game.  Roseau answered with another run, this time a 6-0 run to get within a 42-40 deficit.  Three minutes later, Roseau regained the lead after baskets by Bachleitner and Severson and a three-pointer from Reegen Kevin for a 47-46 lead with less than seven minutes remaining.  Crookston regained the lead with another three from Smith and a basket by Borowicz for a 51-47 lead.  Crookston led 57-55 with 2:08 left in the game.  Crookston didn’t allow Roseau to score the rest of the game, and Abby Borowicz and Emma Gunderson scored two points each, Winjum added two free throws with 40 seconds left, and the Pirates held on for a 63-55 victory.
