CROOKSTON GIRLS BASKETBALL USES RUNS TO BEAT STEPHEN-ARGYLE

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball team used two big runs to open up a double-digit lead, and they never looked back as they beat the Stephen-Argyle Storm 67-46 in a game played in Argyle.  The Storm are coached by Gary Kotts, a 1979 Crookston Central High School graduate. 

FIRST HALF –
Crookston started the game on a 9-2 run with four different players scoring.  Stephen-Argyle settled in with a basket from Tessa Durand and six points in a row from Liv Efta to give the Storm a 10-9 lead four minutes into the game.
Crookston responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Halle Winjum and Abby Borowicz for a 15-10 lead.  The teams exchanged baskets and free throws for two minutes, and Crookston led 18-15 six minutes into the game.
Stephen-Argyle struggled to make their shots for the remainder of the half while Crookston took over.  Isabelle Smith sparked an 8-0 run with a basket, Winjum added four points before Smith made another basket to give the Pirates a 26-15 lead halfway through the half.
The teams were more even in the final eight minutes of the half as Crookston outscored the Storm 14-8 to take a 40-23 lead into halftime.  

SECOND HALF –
Crookston started the second half on a 5-0 run with two Smith free throws and a Winjum three-pointer for a 45-23 lead.  The teams would exchange baskets for the rest of the game, and Crookston led 55-33 with nine minutes left.
Crookston’s Winjum scored her 25th point of the game with 7:34 left in the game, and she was pulled for the remainder while the Pirates went to the bench for the rest of the game and played all 15 girls that dressed.  Stephen-Argyle also went to the bench and was able to play everybody that dressed.
Crookston won the game 67-46.

Crookston improves to 16-9 on the year and will wrap up the regular season on Friday when they host Breckenridge.  Stephen-Argyle drops to 6-15 on the year and will wrap up the regular season when they travel to Fertile-Beltrami on Thursday.
