Roseau built up a 3-0 lead after two periods of play before Crookston scored with about six minutes to go in the game to cut it to 3-1 and a power play coming up. The Pirates didn’t score on the power play which lasted 12 seconds as Crookston also took a penalty. The Rams Lily Erickson scored two goals 22 seconds apart with 2:46 left to go to blow open a 5-1 win at the Crookston Sports Center on Tuesday night.
FIRST PERIOD
Crookston would have a great chance to start the game when Captain Addison Fee rang a shot in front off the Roseau goal to keep it scoreless. Roseau would connect with nice passing from their junior standout Jasmine Hova, who drew a couple Pirates over and she connected on a perfect pass to Ellas Ketring to tap it in to make it Roseau 1-0 with six and a half minutes to go in the period. “Roseau was all over us in the first period,” said Todd Olson, Crookston coach, “that was a nice passing play, but we have to be able to cover them in front like that.” Crookston had two power plays in the period and mustered only one shot total in the two extra man attacks! “Our power play didn’t do very well,” said Olson, “we must do a better job of looking for the pass and do it quick. We told the girls before the game that you have to be at least three seconds faster tonight to play with their speed. They don’t give you much time and space.”
SECOND PERIOD
Kambelle Freije, the Crookston senior captain goalie was tested throughout the game and the second period was no different. She made some very good saves with great anticipation and was helped at least once by a pipe shot by the Rams. Roseau struck twice late in the period again with the first one coming with five and a half minutes left in the period. The first was a draw that was won by senior Payton Remick back to defenseman Summer Byfuglien whose slow shot went off the glove of Freije to make it 2-0. Just over two and a half minutes later, Hovda again after receiving a pass from Greta Hedlund to the left of the Crookston goal, turned a Pirate inside out and flicked a high shot in to make it 3-0. Crookston had a couple chances with a close in shot that went just wide and another scramble in front of the Rams net that they couldn’t get at the loose puck. “It’s hard to give up late goals,” said Olson, “they move the puck so well, looking to pass and moving it into our end and catching ourselves catching up.” Crookston went 0-2 on the power play in the second period (actually, 12 seconds were rolled into the third period). Crookston managed only three shots on goal in the period.
THIRD PERIOD
Interesting enough, in all three periods, no goal was scored until at least six and a half minutes to go in the period. Crookston won a game 3-0 last night over East Grand Forks and came back tonight against one of the faster teams they’ll see, while Roseau hadn’t played since last Tuesday when they lost 4-1 to Warroad. Crookston would score first in the period with 5:43 to go as the Pirates leading scorer Jocelyn Field knotted her 13th of the year making a couple nice moves in front and got it past Madi Lisell, the Roseau sophomore netminder to make it 3-1. Roseau would take a penalty with 2:46 to go in the game and Crookston took a time out at that time to give their power play unit players a chance to rest up for a final charge. Problem was, Crookston took a penalty 12 seconds later to make it four on four hockey! Six seconds later, Roseau’s Lily Erickson a senior struck, stealing a puck and coming in and scored to make it 4-1! Still four on four and Erickson struck again, this time on a nice pass from Remick to make it 5-1 and Roseau picks up the win on the road. “We didn’t play particularly well tonight,” said Coach Olson, “we reverted to some of playing where they would take away our space and when we did look to pass it was too late and they turned it around going the other way. We like playing these tougher teams and learn from our mistakes to make us better.” Roseau seniors, Payton Remick and Lily Erickson along with junior Jasmine Hovda have all committed to play Division I hockey at St. Cloud State with Remick & Erickson next year and Hovda the following year.
Crookston is now 11-6-1 on the year and will have their hands full this weekend. They play at #3AA Centennial on Friday night at 7:00 PM and it will be on KROX RADIO starting at 6:30 PM. Then Saturday afternoon the Pirates play at Champlin Park-Coon Rapids at 3:00 PM and that game will not be broadcasted on any KROX platform.
Roseau, ranked #10 in Class AA this week, improves to 16-4-0 and will host #8 ranked Moorhead on Thursday night and Brainerd-Little Falls on Saturday afternoon.
