THE HENDRICKSON SISTERS SCORE SEVEN TIMES BEATING THE PIRATES 14-0

The Hendrickson sisters scored seven goals, five from senior Genevieve and two from sophomore Talya, to lead the #1 ranked Warroad Warriors to a 14-0 Section 8A Girl’s Hockey game in Warroad.

First Period
After Crookston had the first shot on goal, the Warriors took over with constant pressure. They scored three and a half minutes into the game when Genevieve Hendrickson was able to knock down a Pirate clearing pass, and a quick shot beat Crookston goalie Kailee Magsam and a 1-0 Warrior lead. “We started well,” said Crookston head coach Tim Moe, “but we couldn’t sustain anything as they are quick and strong and had us backtracking a lot of the period.” The puck didn’t find it’s way out of the Crookston zone for most of the period except for some icings, and some nice passing contributed to two goals 48 seconds apart on goals from Maddy Laverngne and Genevieve Hendrickson with her second, and Warroad led 3-0 six minutes into the game. The Warriors added two more before the period ended, and both involved defenseman Cahlilah Lindquist. First, she received a nice pass in the left circle from Laverngne and let a high wrister go that beat the glove of Magsam. The second was when Lindquist crashed the net, and Talya Hendrickson put a rebound in to give Warroad a 5-0 after one period. “We talked between the periods that we have to go out there and put the game in three’s, they won the first period, now let’s go out and try to win the second period,” said Moe.

Second Period
Trying to win the second period was not in the cards for the Pirates as Warroad scored three times in the first six minutes of the period, Adriana Huerd on her first shift of the game. Then the Hendrickson sisters, Talya on a nearly three on nobody but the Pirate goalie and Genevieve got her third of the game and Warroad led 8-0. “We were losing people all night,” said coach Moe, “we didn’t know where we or they were on the ice a lot, and that contributed to a number of goals.” Genevieve Hendrickson would score two more in the period, the second one on a beautiful tip in front that found the net, and Abbey Hardwick also scored and led 11-0 after two periods. “Kailee Magsam had 27 saves after two periods,” said Moe, “she gave up some goals, many were not her fault, and she really made some tough saves too. You could look at the scoreboard and say the goalie wasn’t playing well. That wasn’t the case here.”

Third Period
Warroad scored three more goals in the third period. The first was defenseman Katierie Sandy on a nice wrist shot from the top of the circle, Abbey Hardwick on a two on one, and Kate Johnson finished it off. “Warroad is ranked number one in the state and has a very good hockey team,” said Moe, “we want to be at their level in the future, and to get there, we have a lot of things to do. We will watch some tape, hopefully sometime Monday, before heading over to Mayville to play Fargo North-South. It will show a lot of things that you can’t see at ice level. Looking at situations and what you could have done differently, people behind you, things like that. We have to learn from this, if we think we’re good playing in practice, this shows us we have a ways to go, but the kids never gave up. They were skating hard right until the end.”

Crookston is now 1-3 on the season, and next up is Fargo North-South (N.D.) in Mayville, N.D. at 7:00 PM with varsity only. Fargo North-South is one of the top teams in North Dakota, and they defeated East Grand Forks this week 7-3. Warroad is 2-0 overall and in Section 8A while being ranked number one in Minnesota Class A girl’s hockey.
