CROOKSTON GIRL’S TENNIS BEAT MOORHEAD FALL TO TRF

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis team went 1-1 in the Crookston Triangular that featured Moorhead and Thief River Falls. Both of Crookston’s matches would be well fought, with a 4-3 victory over Moorhead and a 4-3 loss to Thief River Falls.

CROOKSTON VS MOORHEAD
Crookston was short-handed in the match, with two of the 10 regulars in the line-up missed because of illness.
The Pirates loaded two sophomores into the line-up, and they fit in perfectly. Crookston jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the sister duo of Logan and Coral Brekken played together for the first time in a varsity match, and they cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
The next five matches finished nearly the same time as Moorhead won the first singles match 6-0, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1.
Crookston picked up wins at third singles with Paige Abrahamson picking up a hard-fought victory after winning the first set 6-2, and she outlasted her opponent in the second set with a 7-5 victory.
Ashlyn Bailey dominated her match at fourth singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, and Crookston led 3-1.
Moorhead won the first and second doubles matches. The first match complete was the second doubles match, where Moorhead won the first set 6-4 and coasted to a 6-1 second-set victory.
Moorhead won a great match at first doubles. Both sets were back and forth, but Moorhead won by identical 6-4 scores to tie the match at 3-3.
The final match of the dual was second singles, with Isabelle Smith battling Moorhead’s Elizabeth Glatt. Smith won the first set 6-3. The two battled back and forth in the second set and were tied at 6-6. Smith came out and played outstanding tennis with some solid shots for points and won the tie-breaker 7-2 to win the set 7-6. The win gave the Pirates a 4-3 team victory to improve to 9-4.

CROOKSTON VS THIEF RIVER FALLS
The Pirates would start the match against the Prowlers strong with a 3rd singles win from Paige Abrahamson 6-2, 6-0. Two pairs of doubles would come in next, first with Thief River Falls winning a close 3rd doubles match aggainst Georgia Sanders and Logan Brekken 6-4, 6-4, and Morgan Nelson and Coral Brekken winning the 2nd doubles match 6-3, 6-3.
Thief River Falls would gain some momentum, as Avery Skaar would beat Brekken Tull in the 1st singles match 6-0, 6-2. Just a little bit later, Braylee Wienen would beat Isaelle Smith in the 2nd double match 6-2, 6-0.
With the Prowlers ahead by one, it came down to the last two matches, 1st doubles and 4th singles. Kaylie Clauson and Addie Fee would win after a tightly contested second set to get the 1st doubles victory 6-2, 7-5. Thief River Falls would clinch the match with a 6-2, 6-3 in 4th singles, winning 4-3 over Crookston.

Crookston is 9-4 on the season and heads to the Bemidji triangular to take on Detroit Lakes and Bemidji on Tuesday.
