The #9 ranked and #3 seed Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis showed why they are ranked so high, as they defeated the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines in the quarterfinals of the Section 8A tournament at Courts Plus in Fargo. The first four Pirates to finish their matches all won, and Crookston ultimately took the victory by a score of 5-2.
Paige Abrahamson was the first to finish, getting a 4th singles win 6-1, 6-1. Ashlyn Bailey and Coral Brekken dominated their 3rd singles match by a score of 6-1, 6-0 to give Crookston the 2-0 lead. Addie Fee won her third singles match with a close second set 6-1, 7-5. Morgan Nelson and Georgia Sanders had a close match, but they were able to win 6-3, 6-4, giving Crookston the 4-0 lead and the match victory.
The rest of the matches were incredibly close. Kaylie Clauson and Emma Gunderson narrowly lost a tiebreaker in the first set of the first doubles match, and Wadena-Deer Creek won the match 6-6 (7-4), 6-1. Isabelle Smith lost in a tiebreaker in second singles 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. The final Crookston athlete to finish was Brekken Tull, who won a close match in first singles 6-3, 7-6. (7-4). Crookston won the match by a score of 5-2.
Crookston improves to 14-5 and takes on Thief River Falls in the semi-finals. Wadena-Deer Creek ends their season 12-6.
