CROOKSTON GIRL’S TENNIS CRUISES TO A VICTORY OVER DETROIT LAKES

The Crookston Pirates Girl’s Tennis team played a great match and coasted to a 6-1 victory over the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a match played at the Crookston High School tennis courts. “The girls came out and played well,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken.

Crookston had a nice addition to the line up with Emma Borowicz back after missing the first seven matches because of a knee injury she suffered during the basketball season in March.  Borowicz and Catherine Tiedemann have played in the State High School Girls Tennis Individual tennis tournament the past two seasons.  The bad news, Crookston was without the Winjum sisters (Hayden and Halle).

SINGLES –
Emma Osborn played first singles for the first time in her career and came away with an impressive 6-3, 6-1.  “She played well,” said Coach Brekken. “She played great with tough groundstrokes with smart shots.  I was really impressed with how she played.”

Hannah Lindemoen played well and suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss.  “She ran into a similar opponent today,” said Coach Brekken. “Hannah played well with some long points.”

Brekken Tull played a marathon and won a rollercoaster match by winning the first set 6-1 before falling in the second set 6-0 and she won the third set 6-3.  “It was one of those confusing scores,” said Coach Brekken. “She came out strong and struggled in the second set but showed good stamina and won the third set.  It was great to see her battle back in the third set.”

Abby Borowicz played another solid match at fourth singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. “Abby has played a fair amount of singles now,” said Coach Brekken. “She’s able to play different styles and played a solid match today.”

DOUBLES –
The two-time state doubles tournament participant duo of Emma Borowicz and Catherine Tiedemannwon their first doubles match 6-3, 6-2.  “It was great to see Emma back out there today,” said Coach Brekken. “It was fun to get the state duo back out on the court and to get a win makes it even better.”

Halle Bruggeman and Emma Gunderson won a hard-fought 6-1, 6-3. “They continue to play well,” said Coach Brekken. “They have smart play and work together well.”

The cousin duo of Macy Fee and Addie Fee completed the Pirate doubles sweep with a battle at third doubles to pick up a 6-4, 6-3 victory.  “It was good to see those two on the court together,” said Coach Brekken. “They work well together and Macy is tough at the net and Addie has good shot placement.”

The Pirates improve to 7-1 on the year and will travel to Park Rapids on Thursday.  “It is great to have a few pieces of the line up removed and still pick up a 6-1 win,” said Coach Brekken. “It is fun to see how competitive the team is and we can plug and play girls in different spots and we still have success.”
There will be a meeting of Section 8A Girls Tennis coaches on Wednesday night to decide when the Section 8A Girls Tennis team tournament will be played and how seeding will work. “All of us coaches will meet and look at seeding and if there will be a consolation bracket this year.  October 5 is the first day we can start all the way to October 17 and we will find dates in that time frame.”
